Bill_D hit the nail on the head. The old tang safety 77's are a hit or a miss, quite literally. Not sure if there's much truth to it but, I was once told by an old gunsmith that Bill Ruger told his acquisitions crew to source barrels from anyone and everyone as long as they could get the blanks...

PROJECT GUN. This is a BSA Monarch 458 Winchester magnum that does fire properly. The ole girl actually shoots pretty good. The stock is laminated and is rough finished and does have a crack behind the tang. I will include 2 Talley crossbolt s with the gun. The magazine box, spring, follower...
WD-40 was definitely involved. That's kinda rough, but not horrible by any means. I work in a custom shotgun shop and we see stuff worse than that on a weekly basis, especially during duck season.
The vanguard is pretty hard to beat for the money. For your budget I'm pretty sure you could get the Sub-MOA version which has an accuracy guarantee of less than 1MOA at 100 yards. I've shot several of these guns and they all shoot great, most of em shoot well under 1MOA with handloads.
I've shot several dozen deer with several different styles and weights of bullets in the ole 270. The 130 Barnes are straight up killers. There is no other bullet that I've tried that puts deer on their ass as fast or as efficiently. The 140 Accubonds that I shoot now are really close and work...
