I got to work up some loads for the 400 Whelen. Hawk .411 dia. 350gr. RT with .035 jacket thickness. CFE 223, 66.5gr. 2313 fps. Hornady .410 dia. 400gr. DGS, CFE 223, 65gr. 2127 fps. Hopefully I'll get to take some game with it this fall.

Bob, that looks nice. I duracoated my 35 Whelen barrel in flat black, it matched the Savage blued action well. It sells for $45.95 here in the US. Barrel prep is easy and you just but three coats on just like spray paint, and let it cure for three to four weeks before hard use.

CFE223 is all I have used for my 400 Whelen. I have not test any in my 35 Whelen. I have some Hawk bullets on order for both calibers. I have the 400 dies set up and am hoping the bullets come soon so I don't have to switch back and forth. If not I will go a head and work n some loads for the 35...

We do it because it is fun to us. What load powder are you using with the 275gr. in your 35 Whelen?

Yes there are a number of 9.3 cartridges, not confusing them. I only said similar not the same, yes the 9.3x64 is faster but not enough to make up for the wrong bullets or shot placement and if those two things are not met it's a bad day with any caliber/cartridge.

The 9.3 is only .008 of an inch larger in diameter witch is not enough for a huge difference. I have looked in my Woodleigh loading manual and in comparing the 35 and all the 9.3 cartridges there really is not that much difference. If the 9.3 is what you like by all means use it, they are good...

I have not had the pleasure of seeing in person a 9.3 rifle much less the chance to shot one, I am a gun guy so I'll shot any rifle if I get the chance. I don't think those universal guns and test barrels are as close to real world rifles that we use as the manufactures want us to think they are.

That's why we start below the max and work up.

They list 70gr. of cfe223 as their max load with a universal 24" 1-12 twist barrel.
