    400 Whelen

I got to work up some loads for the 400 Whelen. Hawk .411 dia. 350gr. RT with .035 jacket thickness. CFE 223, 66.5gr. 2313 fps. Hornady .410 dia. 400gr. DGS, CFE 223, 65gr. 2127 fps. Hopefully I'll get to take some game with it this fall.

One rifle for North American big game?

Col. Whelen used a lot of caliber/cartridges over his life time, from small American rounds to British big bores and liked them all. He said the best two all around for America was the 257 Roberts and the 270 Win., He also saw the advantage of larger bores and with James Howe they developed the...

    400 Whelen

Bob, that looks nice. I duracoated my 35 Whelen barrel in flat black, it matched the Savage blued action well. It sells for $45.95 here in the US. Barrel prep is easy and you just but three coats on just like spray paint, and let it cure for three to four weeks before hard use.

    Want To Buy 400 Whelen

I have some Speer 250gr'ers I will be testing, I have read good reviews on them and they are about the most affordable 35 caliber bullets available, so I'm hoping the do well in my rifles. I have some Sierra 225gr game kings and some Nosler 225gr. partitions two try with CFE223. I have somevery...

    Want To Buy 400 Whelen

CFE223 is all I have used for my 400 Whelen. I have not test any in my 35 Whelen. I have some Hawk bullets on order for both calibers. I have the 400 dies set up and am hoping the bullets come soon so I don't have to switch back and forth. If not I will go a head and work n some loads for the 35...

    Want To Buy 400 Whelen

I have not been on this site that long and was looking to see if there was any post on the 400 Whelen, and found this one. I bought my 400 whelen last year, was able to get brass and die s from the owner. Was just wondering how things have been going with your rifle. I had shoulder surgery last...

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

We do it because it is fun to us. What load powder are you using with the 275gr. in your 35 Whelen?
  10. 3

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

Yes there are a number of 9.3 cartridges, not confusing them. I only said similar not the same, yes the 9.3x64 is faster but not enough to make up for the wrong bullets or shot placement and if those two things are not met it's a bad day with any caliber/cartridge.
  11. 3

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

The 9.3 is only .008 of an inch larger in diameter witch is not enough for a huge difference. I have looked in my Woodleigh loading manual and in comparing the 35 and all the 9.3 cartridges there really is not that much difference. If the 9.3 is what you like by all means use it, they are good...

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

I have not had the pleasure of seeing in person a 9.3 rifle much less the chance to shot one, I am a gun guy so I'll shot any rifle if I get the chance. With that being said comparing the 35 Whelen to the 9.3's from what I have seen, read, heard, ect., trying to make one better then the other is...

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

I don't think those universal guns and test barrels are as close to real world rifles that we use as the manufactures want us to think they are.

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

That's why we start below the max and work up.

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

They list 70gr. of cfe223 as their max load with a universal 24" 1-12 twist barrel.
  16. 3

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

Sierra list max velocity of the 225 game king with cfe223 at 2900 fps. That seams to be getting pretty hot, what do you think?

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

I have some Speer 250's and some Sierra 225's that I am going to try with CFE223. Hope to get it done before fall hunting season. I have both of their new reloading manuals. They both show very impressive results.

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

I think the 350 A-Frame will be one heck of a bear load. I have some Hawk 350gr bullets on order too, I'll see how they compare to the swifts.

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

I have not been able to hunt with my 400 Whelen but hopefully this fall I will. The loads I have worked up with it so far are very good. 300gr. Hornady at 2430 fps., 350gr. Swift A-Frame at 2327 fps., 400gr. Hornady DGX at 2150 fps., 400gr. Swift A-Frame at 2177 fps. All with CFE223.

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

Back in the 120's things were a lot different then they are now. James Howe and Col. Whelen intended for the 35 Whelen to use bullets up to 300gr. in an affordable rifle/cartridge combination that would still be very affective. I think they did a fine job at accomplishing their goal. Yes, Bob...

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

I'd like to see how that turns out and compare what your 375 dose with what I get with my 400.
  22. 3

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

The 35 whelen with a 250gr. bullet will more than likely kill more then I'll ever get the chance to shoot, I just have the bug to try some 275's just to do it.
  23. 3

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

The 35 Whelen built it's reputation with 250gr. bullets, and most feel that it is the best all around bullet weight for the 35 Whelen. Col. Whelen and Elmer Keith both liked 275gr. bullets in their 35's, but they did not have the bullets we do today. 225 an 250gr. bullets will be my main...

Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

Has any one loaded 275gr. to 310gr. bullets in the 35 Whelen? I have some 275gr. Hawk bullets on order. I have not found much load data for heavy bullets in the 35 Whelen. If any one has used any brand of .358 bullets of 275gr and bigger in their 35 Whelen I would like to hear your experience...

    400 Whelen

I got some swift 350gr. and 400gr. A-frames at a good deal to try in my .400W. They shoot very well and I would not question their performance on game, the only problem is the price. I have some hornady 400gr. that shoot just as good as the swifts and to the same point of impact, normal price is...

    400 Whelen

Some people here are like that too, and then others think that if it don't coast an arm and a leg it's not any good. Many do have to be very tight with there money simply because they don't have much. I am one that don't make a lot of money and it a inexpensive bullet work well I'll use it, but...

    400 Whelen

Just wondering. I knew many of our powders were imported. CFE223 and superformane are under the Hodgdon brand here in the U.S. Of coarse Hodgdon owns Winchester powders but the Olin Corp. still owns all rights to the Winchester name and licenses it out. It's crazy what companies do, and it dose...

    400 Whelen

I am going to try CFE223 in 222rem., 308win., 32win. spl., and 35whelen, if I can get reasonable velocity and good accuracy I'll be happy. Is your inability to get some of the newer powders do to the currant covid-19 or just crazy laws?
  32. 3

    400 Whelen

I have had good results with CFE223 in 30-30 Win. and 400 Whelen, I will be trying it in a number of other cartridges too. If I get good results in them I will have few powders to have to get. The only problem there may be getting enough of it.

They are a bit slow but still have a good thump, I tested some hotter loads but the group was not as tight so I decided to go with the most accurate load. I'm hopping to try the speer 250gr with cfe223 before fall, I'm hopping they do well.

    400 Whelen

Mart is very knowledgeable with the 400 Whelen. Gunner500 is too, he is the one that uses cfe223, an that load is what he used in Africa. Mart looked at the burn rate and said it look like cfe223 would be a good chose. Both said my loads looked good. I use QC brass, it has been working grate...

Looks like your doing good with that banes bullet in your 35W. I'm getting 2600fps with the nosler 225gr. partition, 24" barrel 1-14 twist. I can go hotter but my groups were starting to get bigger. So I went with this load and it is very accurate, about 1/4" at 100 yards if I do my part. I have...

    400 Whelen

The 40 calibers are all pretty darn good cartridges, it's just all in witch one you like or prefer. No rain, no argument about 2000fps, at that speed a 400gr. bullets is still a thumper. I am just able to get a little more with no pressure signs and the recoil is not bad, an the accuracy is very...
