Native man with Banteng hunted in 1896 by the "Livingstone of Borneo" reputed Dutch explorer, medical officer and naturalist Anton Willem Nieuwenhuis (b. 1864 – d. 1953), who travelled extensively in central Borneo in the 1890s, recording valuable ethnographic information about the Dayak people and making biological collections. He crossed Borneo at the ce ter, twice, from each direction.
