Merkel 140AE - 500NE DR ready for your next Dangerous Game Hunt.
2012 Production, Imported by Steyr Arms in Trussville, AL.
Anson & Deeley Box Lock, Double Triggers. Greener Locking Mechanism, with double underlug locking.
Beautiful color case hardened receiver, with some light engraving.
Factory LOP: 365mm; 14.37 Inches to the Front Trigger.
Factory Weight: 4.7KG or 10.36lbs
Barrels: 23.6” Rust Blued
Triggers: Front (Right) 6.5lb, Rear (Left) 7.5lb
Front Sight: Gold Bead
Rear Sight: Wide V Express Sight, with 2 Fold-Down Blades (50, 75)
Stock: European Walnut, with classic styled cheekpiece
Rail is cut from the Factory for a Red Dot or other Optics Mount.
Rifle comes with a manufacturer’s leather case (as pictured), factory leather sling, and includes factory lock setting directions.

I’m the 2nd owner of this rifle. Was told the 1st owner was an older doctor who purchased it new hoping to go on a Full Bag Safari. As he aged, he realized it was going to be too much gun for him. At the time of purchase, I was told it was never fired. I’ve since put about a box and a 1/2, maybe 2 full boxes of rounds through it. All shots have been standing off a trigger stick while’s testing different factory loads at 50 and 100yds. This rifle has never seen Africa and aside from 2 sits in the deer blind for hogs (none shot) it’s never been hunted with. It’s still on the stiff side when putting together due to how little it’s been put together and shot. Locks up extremely tight.

The Two Targets Pictured are a pair of factory loaded Federal Woodleigh Solids, and Pair of Federal A-Frames. In addition to the above loads, I’ve tested factory Federal Loaded TSX, and Factory Barnes TSX FB. The Federal TSX shot similarly to the A-Frames. The Barnes shot more of a side by side group (left barrel was still lightly higher) but was spaced over 2 inches apart. I will include 2 full boxes of Ammo with the sale (your choice from the ones listed above, but only have 1 box of the factory Barnes and multiple of all 3 Factory Federal Options).

$12,000 face to face in Texas or will ship to an FFL at buyers expense

Feel free to PM me with questions.

Can provide buying/selling references on AH as requested.

I had one of these pre-neck fusion. Mine shot everything really well. I think they are a lot of rifle for the money and yours is even more so with all of the extras. Good luck with the sale.

Safe shooting

I have owned a gun identical to this and loved it. Merkle great brand. This gun appears to be in almost new condition. GLWS

Thank you gentleman ….

All PM’s responded to.

To publicly answer a couple questions

1) This Rifle particular rifle has never been to Africa
2) I’ve never worked up a handload for it.
3) I did reached out to Tobi with Merkel he was unable to provide information on what exactly it was regulated for but confirmed the LOP and Weight
4) Speaking with JJ it is possible to add a longer pad or spacer should you require one. He can also shorten the LOP

Wow I've been waiting for a .470 but might have to reconsider...
She’s available.

I personally prefer the 500 compared to the 470, and have had a much easier time finding the ammo I like/prefer for the 500 vs. the .470, but she’s a a bit to short for my abnormally long LOP.

Based on the last pricing I could find, these Merkel’s are $13,920 New, and that doesn’t include the manufacturers leather case. Chapuis is MAP’d at $15k

Speaking from experience having owned 2 470’s and 2 500’s the difference in recoil is negligible

Shame your not in the UK. GLWS mate.

If I was a betting man I would guess 500 grain bullet at 2150 FPS

How's the recoil on the 500NE at 10.36lbs?

I always assumed 500NE doubles were closer to 12lbs.
I’m far from recoil intolerant so I might not be the best judge. Thats the factory weight from Merkel and I’ve met several PH’s who use the Merkels and love them. Several members of this forum have had them and enjoyed them. If one were to find it’s a little too much recoil they could add a pad or have a reducer installed in the stock. My issue is I have an abnormally long LOP, so much that replacing that pad with a 2” pad + at least a 1.5” spacer will be needed.

To put things in perspective; I put about 1/2 the total round count through it (a full box) from a single range session in just a tee-shirt. The range session also included a box and a 1/2 of 470 out of the Chapuis, 2.5 boxes of 375 from a couple different rifles, plus a box of 458WM. I was taking 2 shots @ 50 followed by 2 @ 100, then switching to all the other guns and longer targets with the 375 before coming back to test the next load. The short LOP will increase the felt recoil drastically. Not sure how many rounds other people shoot when they’re testing loads but that seemed like a lot of big bore rounds in a single session, especially when I started adding up the cost

If I was a betting man I would guess 500 grain bullet at 2150 FPS
Wouldn’t surprise me the A-Frames and Woodleighs shoot at 2100fps according to the federal box. Never chronographed them

Beautiful rifle! If you have the opportunity, please post a photo or two of the underside of the receiver. I can see in one of the angled photos that it has engraving, but I'd like to have a better look at it. Thx

Is this rifle sold? If not what is the weight of it and do you know if there is enough difference in diameter between the 35W and the 9.3 to allow for a rebore to a 9.3x62 which is what I am after?
Thanks,
Gary (Just down the road in Springfield)

Forgive me if this is the incorrect area, I signed up to this forum just now because I wanted to be on the list to purchase a copy of your autobiography. Please feel free to pass my information along to whomever is selling. Thank you so much. I look forward to it!
I like the Tillie in my picture. They are supposed to fit loose (2 fingers inside hat band), have mesh for cooling, and hold their shape after washing.
