With recent interest in hunting Elephants-
If you could have your ideal Rifle set up for Elephants what would it be?
Which rifle, sight/scope, and caliber/cartridge would you choose?
From my limited Elephant research is seems Zimbabwe has good prices, possibly smaller tusks? Botswana has a great reputation for lots of elephants. Zambia and Tanzania are just really expensive to hunt, travel to, but do have the chance at huge bulls. I have seen good things about Namibia which...
I have seen elephant prices all over the place from $5,000 tuskless/problem animals up to your mentioned $100,000 hunt.
For $100K I would expect a big trophy 60#++ and also a buffalo and lots of other plains game thrown in gratis!
The big difference is price for a lot of these hunts is...
Which country do you prefer? Say for a buffalo hunt, or maybe an Elephant? With a few plains game as an option.
Do they both have English speakers? Ease of travel? How do they compare- on whatever criteria you want?
If going to RSA don’t worry and use Henry @Rifle permits. Do what he says.
If traveling more exotic airlines then uniformed ticketing agents will be the biggest concern. Especially if connecting in a liberal big city (Europe ) where guns are evil!
One thing to watch was the limit on weight of...
Where are you from? And what are you planning to hunt?
Local air taxis can be particular about who and where they drop people depending on what they are doing. Also many local air taxis, especially for hunts have gone to the flat rate model and are charging a lot more for trips, especially...
I would say Greenland was one of my best hunting trips I have ever been on. Definitely would recommend it.
AK caribou can be hit or miss.... more miss lately. If you have realistic expectations and not picky on what you shoot then it can still be ok.
I have killed all 10 with a bow but have not registered it.
As to the super slam I have 23/29 most with a bow and a few with a rifle. Was a life goal to finish it, Probably would have been done with all 29 but got distracted hunting Africa! :D
My buddy had a homeless guy squatting in a garage he owned. Tried to make a deal with him- mow the lawn once a week with the provided mower annd gas then he could stay there.
Was turned down by the squatter saying it was too much and he wasn’t accustomed to work
We went to Georgetown TX to see the totality.
There is a night and day difference between 99% and 100%. Like turning off the lights! Hard to explain just have to experience it. I also saw the one in 2017 in Casper WY
That was an 8wt, very lucky and had a good buddy with net. Was fishing for reds that day. I have broken an 8wt rod on kings before I learned when to give up
I normally use a 10wt if targeting kings
Most people get attached to too many things. What will happen to all the things when you pass? I would say live in the moment and do what you enjoy. Make the trade to get what you want and will use.
Holding on to something that no longer brings joy, or serves you, "just in case" for some...
As mentioned it seems like Uganda was the go to for many old buff? Has this changed? Has increased hunting pressure reduced the average age bulls there?
How realistic is it to own land that has hunting opportunities? Say in Queensland or NSW?
If that’s not a viable option are there hunting leases or clubs that have access land?
I see folks asking about retiring to Africa frequently (mainly due to the lower cost of living and proximity to hunt). There is always a mention or two for Australia as a better way to go (stable government and healthcare)
How would the costs compare though? It would seem to be on par with...
Great to see Botswana defending their stance on hunting Elephants to the liberal European governments!

How would those Elephants fare in Germany
No one is saying polar bear hunting is closed, just that it IS closed in Alaska, USA to non Natives.
In Nunavut, Canada the villages are issued the permits with a certain number set aside eligible to be sold to anyone with a local guide taking them out. You have to get the permit from a...
Lots of Polar Bears in Alaska, but since 1972 you have to be Alaskan Native to hunt them.... a few are killed every year and I see them at the tannery, taxidermist shop. They can also still hunt whales, seals etc in Alaska.... (and I thought all Americans were equal) You can legally have a...
I have a polar bear sitting in Canada. It is what it is. At least I have never been tied to taxidermy and only have a few mounts. The experience is what I am after. I have like 23/29 so far and most with a bow..... (If it wasn't for so many trips to Africa I would probably already have all...
I have hunted the NaPali coast for goats (a few pigs in there). It’s an archery area open year round. The goats are pretty far in the Kalalau trail. Need to pack in camp etc
And remember the time CA ousted the President of the Fish and Game Commission for legally hunting a mt lion in Idaho?

Not pro hunting
So you are right, it wasn’t PETA but is was the Humane Society!
HSUS is just as bad of an anti hunting group!

FYI PETA trains and runs the fish and game officers in California! They train them to protect all animals and harass and investigate all hunters! There are no hunters on the board of Game in CA
Accuracy is everything, then a soft expandable bullet. Caliber not so much. I personally would not use a monolithic bullet (like the Barnes) they tend to go straight through instead of rapidly expanding and causing more shock.
The last thing you want with a leopard is a blood trailing job...
Unfortunate for the old rancher…
Brings to mind old military training about OPSEC (operational security for the non acronym folk) and keeping information on a need to know only basis. Like the old WWII posters- Loose Lips Sink Ships.
Probably should have kept his experimental hybrids top...
Here is a double well within your price range and in the great 450/400 chambering

They are not the lightest stocks, but for Africa appropriate calibers they are great, especially for the price.
I have one on my Ruger 9,3x62 and its way better than the original.
