As a follow up to my original reply regarding my experience in the Karoo with the 375 all animals were shot with a 300 grain Barnes TSX.
Kudu at 280 yards facing me slightly quartering. Bullet in medial to left shoulder and exited right inner thigh near scrotum. Ran 40 yards.
Common and Copper...
I was late in taking a 375 to Africa. I did not use one until Safari #3. It saved the day. I had a game ending malfunction with my custom 318 while in the Karoo. No gunsmith or parts were going to be forthcoming anytime soon.
The 375 I had with me “just in case” saved the trip. I was able to...
What you will gain is near 100% weight retention and penetration. I am a big fan of 2 holes for every shot. One in, one out. Every animal hit counts, recovered or not. Exit wounds improve your chances of recovery in my opinion.
I have witnessed Blue Wildebeest and Gemsbok in particular soak up...
As the 7mm-08 is the ballistic near twin of the 7x57 you will be well served with your rifle. Not so much with Ballistic tips in my opinion.
I would recommend Barnes TSX 160 grain for any plains game that walks.
I have been well served with Swaro 1-8 on my 375. I appreciate the versatility even if PLANNED shots are to be close range. My 416 Rigby wears a 1-6 which came in handy on a croc that offered a shot.
I have been well served with the Boyt single case. I use the WIDE single model. I remove one set of foam and place 2 rifles in Boyt soft cases facing in opposite directions to each other. 4 trips to Africa with no problems.
Probably a fluke but on my first safari I arrived home with one end...
I would choose the 404 Jeffrey for the same reason I chose it for my first buffalo. Nostalgia. The 404 Jeffrey was the work horse of the game rangers. I know that Ruark made the 416 Rigby sexy but the Jeffrey has earned it stripes.
Go forth and buyeth 300 grain TSX loaded ammo or bullets for reloading forsaking all others, lay thee mind to rest and slay whatever beast thy encountereth.
I do not recall the Partition being all that aerodynamic, but if you are comfortable with the drop and drift out to 400 yards, it is certainly up to the task you describe.
Unless you are using a high BC bullet the only thing the additional 20 grains adds in my opinion is additional recoil...
I would definitely go long. If you have qualifying status with Delta, spend your time in their lounge. Much better food than that on the plane and a long, hot shower prior to the ATL-JNB flight is invigorating. If not look into the credit card company lounges.
No way do I try ATL in 44 minutes.
My 375 set up for Africa is Leupold QD base/rings and Swarovski Z8i. I am not a fan of big objectives or super high magnification. I have shot Springbok past 300 yards with this rifle and scope combo when my other rifle shot craps in the Karoo.
I have used 404 Jeffrey with 400 grain TSX, 450-400 with Hornady bonded, and 416 Rigby with 400 grain TSX.
Rigby has gotten it done the quickest. I plan to use 470 and 458 Lott for the next ones.
I bought mine because of the 2 sets of barrels. I have no complaints but I much prefer my vintage Jeffrey 450-400 and Manton 470. They just feel better in my hands.
I have a Chapuis 9.3x74 SxS with a set of 20 gauge barrels of similar vintage. My load is 58 gr IMR 4350 with 286 Swift A-Frame. Used it on giraffe last year.
Depending on which books you are reading, you may be reading about a time and place that no longer exists. No matter where you go you will never experience the Africa of Hemingway and Ruark.
Rather your safari is a hunt, or a shoot depends on you and your PH. You will not be able to spot and...
The list is long and distinguished but the one I despise above all others is Elliot Management. That is the Paul Singer hedge fund that forced the sale of Cabela’s to bASS pro.
I have never shot a Hartebeest but I have killed everything on your list with Barnes TSX. Jackal and Springbok to Cape Buffalo, I have used TSX with complete satisfaction.
My 7mm Remington magnum in a 700 classic has served me well since 1983. I currently use the Barnes 160 TSX. In the past I also used 140 Nosler bullets. This rifle now gets less use as I am a unrepentant rifle addict but it has killed more game than any other I own.
Longest shot I have taken with 9.3x62 was Jackal at 250 yards. DRT. Longest with 375 H&H was Cape Kudu 275 yards. DRT. Longest with 416 Rigby Cape Buffalo 50 Yards. Fastest kill I have seen on a Buffalo.
I would be comfortable to 300 with all with a good rest off sticks. I prefer powder burn close.
As I have expressed before, I am a firm believer in Barnes bullets, the TSX in particular. Since first using them in 2008, I have had zero problems/failures with them. I have shot animals from Jackal to Buffalo with them and my confidence in them is immense.
I am also an advocate for accuracy...
7x57/275 Rigby. No recoil to speak of. 175 grain round nose was instant death on waterbuck, kudu, steenbok, impala, duiker and blesbok. 100 to 300 yards. Also killed a camel thorn tree that I could not see a branch of on a waterbuck.
I cannot think of a better choice. My daughter and I took a 338 Win Mag to Africa a few years back. I intentionally downloaded the round to mimic the 338-06 to lessen recoil for my daughter. We shot 250 grain Barnes TSX and they were very lethal very quickly.
The performance on game was very...
I WAS scheduled to fly Delta dl201 Johannesburg to Atlanta on Sept. 20. We were told at airport flight was cancelled. No prior notice by Delta or travel agent.
Eventually Delta flew us out on Saturday morning, the 21st. Heard 3 different stories for cancellation. Arrived Atlanta about 10 pm on...
My daughter and I have used Barnes TSX bullets extensively and to a lesser degree the TTSX as well. Since I began using the TSX in 2008 I have personally killed well over 100 animals with it in North America and Africa. Between by daughter and I Coyotes, Pronghorn, Mule Deer, Whitetails, Elk...
Thank for your reply. A friend of mine is looking for this exact rifle. I told him about your ad and he asked to find out if it is still for sale. I will tell him so he can contact you through the forum or you can PM contact info to me if you like.
How does the cost of reboring compare to having the action trued and rebarreling to 9.3x62? I think that would likely improve accuracy as well as scratching the itch for a 9.3.
I had no "issues" with the prior Trijicon. It was a 1-4 Accupoint. I just wanted a little more magnification and after looking through the Swarovski 8i on my 375 I purchased the 6i used at an online auction site.
I have been following this thread with some trepidation having recently swapped out a Trijicon for a Swarovski 6i on my CZ 550 in 416 Rigby. Sunday afternoon I began the zeroing process. Long story short I achieved vertical zero on literally the LAST click left on the dial. That was a close one...
I am still looking for a vintage 303 British double. Top lever, hammerless. If it helps, I promise to take good care of it and play with it every day and only feed it proper ammunition.
