What is the predominant optics on the dark continent?

I am curious to know if anyone has seen a Leupold scope fail due to recoil. I have put a bunch of their scopes through a lot of punishment in the woods, rivers, and mountains, and I have never had one fail or even lose zero. Swaro has nice glass. I have no experience as to their durability...

Had a nice time in Melborne. I drove out the Healesville Sanctuary. Saw some Koalas, a platypus, and a Tazmanian devil. Also got the boots.

What to do in Melbourne or Sydney?

I am about to leave on a quick trip to Australia. I will be primarily spending time in Melbourne and Sydney, and tragically I won't have time for any hunting. Are there are cool outfitters, sporting goods stores, gun shops, or similar destinations I should check out? Any interesting...

416 Rigby and IMR 4350 Data Disparity

If you read my post, you'll see that I did in fact shoot my test loads over a chronograph. This is not my first rodeo. I am hoping someone else has personal experience loading 416 Rigby with IMR 4350. Based on the dearth of responses so far, It appears that is not the case. I agree that...

416 Rigby and IMR 4350 Data Disparity

So I am working on some loads for my new Ruger RSM chambered in 416 Rigby. I will hunt with it next summer at the earliest, so I am in the preliminary stages. I bought some 400 grain Hornady Dangerous Game Solids, and some Hornady brass. I consulted the Hornady manual, and worked up a load...

Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

I can't really come up with three. The overwhelming majority of my big game hunting has been with 300 Winchester Magnum, in one of two rifles. I have also killed a fair number of white tail deer with a 50 caliber muzzle loader. I took my .375 H&H to Africa, and hunted with it two days. I...

    416 Rigby Reloads

I am surprised you didn’t need to crimp. Have you had any problems with your bullets slipping forward in the case under recoil for the rounds in the magazine?

    Which .416 Rigby?

Do you find that it relates in any way to the year of production? Based on the ones I looked it, it seemed like earlier production guns tended to have better wood, but I don't have a big enough sample to say for sure.

By way of update I purchased an unfired RSM in 416 Rigby. Picked it up today. Need to mount the scope and load a few rounds. I hope to shoot it this weekend.

    Best sunglasses for hunting

I have a pair of polarized, prescription sunglasses that replicate my regular eyeglasses prescription, including progressive bifocals. They are the same frames as well. I probably use them more for fly fishing than hunting though.

    Advice on 416 scope

If that is the case, then I withdraw my objection. I have seen reports on other forums of owners who asked Trijicon to recharge the tritium and Trijicon wouldn’t do it. I have no firsthand knowledge, however.

    Advice on 416 scope

I made the statement because that is my opinion. It is of course hyperbole, but the selling point of the scope is its illuminated reticle, and that has a finite life. I won’t be buying one unless Trijicon starts offering a refresh on the tritium. If I am going to spend that kind of money on...

    Advice on 416 scope

I bought an unfired Ruger RSM. It is on its way to my FFL now. The scope was just delivered, and my reloading dies and components arrived yesterday. I went with Warne QD rings which I also have on my .375 and like. I will report back.

    Advice on 416 scope

I just ordered a Leupold VX 3i 1.5-5x24 wih the German No. 4 reticle for my new 416 Rigby. It has been discontinued by Leupold with that reticle, but Midway had some in stock. As to Trijicon, I have an Accupower 3-9x40 on my .30-06, and I like it fine. I am skeptical of the Accupoint line...

    Which dies for 416 Rigby?

    Which dies for 416 Rigby?

I am acquiring an unfired Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby, and I need a set of dies. I prefer Redding, but they are stupidly expensive for this cartridge. RCBS seems to be out of stock everywhere. Hornady and Lyman are readily available. I have several sets of Hornady dies in various calibers. They...

    Kimber 8400 Caprivi

The Kimber Caprivi's are beautiful rifles. I have read some mixed reviews online in terms of durability and accuracy. I look forward to hearing more from the OP as he gets more trigger and field time with his .375. Also, if anyone is looking for one, my LGS has a very nice used one in .375...

    Which calibre

I believe the OP said he borrowed the rifles from his PH. Bringing your rifle with you isn't difficult, but it does require some time and patience, so some hunters opt to borrow rifles from the outfitter. I am sure it has been done, but I can't imagine bringing a rifle but no ammo. On my...

    Which .416 Rigby?

I am thinking about buying a 416 Rigby. After a successful first hunt in Africa in June, I am plotting my return. For me half the fun is setting of the rifles, working up loads, and practicing my shooting. I want to go back and take a cape buffalo. It has long been a bucket list experience...

SOUTH AFRICA: First Safari On My Way To The Eastern Cape June 2018

Day 6 Woke up at 4:30 to finish the week with a fallow deer hunt. We drove about an hour up into Barkly Pass. The elevation rose steeply. We hunted a 4,000 hectare sheep farm surrounded by mountain peaks. We were at about 9,000 feet, and I felt it as we hiked. This was a pure walk and...

Day 3 This morning we drove to another property about 30 minutes away to hunt waterbuck. The terrain was very rugged. We saw a group of five almost right away, but there were three cows and two small bulls--no big bull to shoot. We spent another 2.5 hours locating and stalking a nice bull...
