Hazy, hot and humid out today—nice day for a session at the bench. I loaded up some 9.3x62 practice rounds with PPU 285 grn under w748 with new Norma brass. Should be 2325fps and great practice ammo for this fall’s moose hunt.

A Sudden change to this year’s plans! In June I was fortunate enough to draw a bull moose tag for September in Maine. A terrific addition to this autumn’s planned salmon fishing in New Brunswick and grouse hunting in Vermont.

I’ve seen that several companies are trying to come up with less expensive non toxic alternatives for the vintage guns. Hortonium is one such. If there is a market to keep the vintage guns in the UK fields, the market will find a way.

One of the things I enjoy most about shopping for a new gun, is the research along the way. If you go the British route I’d recommend getting a few of the many good books out there on the trade. Highly suggest Tate’s “Birmingham Gunmakers”, Haddoke’s “the British Boxlock”, several of McIntosh’s...

I’m sure you’re right but I feel that 2350 with a premium bullet is plenty. It sure is accurate from my rifle.

I'm also new to the 9.3x62. I picked up a customized FN built Husqvarna 640 last fall--it is a lot of fun to shoot. I have found lots of good info on the 9.3 here on AH, and I'll see about getting a digital copy of the Journal too. I've been loading PPU brass with W748 under 285gr PPU bullets...

Midway has Nosler in stock. The 180 accubonds shoot great in my pre 64.

I finally got around to working up some loads for my CZ with 400gr Barnes TSX and H4350. Using hornady’s load data I found that 78 grains gave me 2210 and that’s where I want to be. Max load got to 2242.5 but I think I’ll stick with 2200 and call it good. The rifle shot this load beautifully...

I’ve done it with roe deer and wild boar tusks from Romania. They were already completed taxidermy and I packed them in my luggage, declared them with CBP—they checked them upon arrival—no problem. I’ve not tried it from Africa.

I had a great hunt in Transylvania and took a very nice stag with HuntRomania a few years back. I’ve hunted with Marius several times now including roe deer this spring. Great guy and guide to hunt with. I thought about heading back in September for another stag but drew a moose tag in Maine.

Following with interest. I’ve had feeding issues with CEB solids in my CZ 404. I’ve only just started working up the loads but it happened right off the bat.

Another day of pouring rain in New England had me back at the bench. I decided to see how 168gr TSX will do in my 300 H&H. I put together several sets at various charges of H4831sc to test out this week.

I just rechecked with some dummy rounds I made. The magazine will hold 5 but it’s pretty tight. When hunting with it, I’ll load with 4+1 to ensure smooth feeding. Back to the range today to finish sighting it in. Planning for 3” high at 100 for a MPBR of about 240.

Hit the range again. 200 yards, Nosler factory 180gr accubonds +-2950fps. I can definitely live with that. I’m waiting on a new chronograph and when it arrives I’ll try out some 165 TSX and something 200 grains too.

The rifle definitely likes the 180 accubonds at +-3000fps.

Thanks all. I just picked up a box of 180 accubonds and a pound of H4831SC. The rifle really liked the factory accubonds so I’ll work some up tomorrow. I saw some 168 TSX at the shop—I’ve read nothing but good things about them and may try them next.

British boxlocks are the best bargain out there. Very high quality and more shootable dimensions than Foxes, Parkers, etc. I now have three, Horton, Wilkes, Halliday and all see time in the grouse woods. This year the Halliday 2” 12 saw the most time.
