Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

This should be pretty much in that class for me. The sling does make a bigger difference in my view than a few extra oz. Mauser M18 Arken EPL 4-16x 44 Rifle 7.4lbs

Very interesting to see the results, and I think overall this community is better prepared for their hunts than the normal hunter.

I think I would test these. Will work for some plains game also.

Long Range hunting versus bowhunting wound loss rates?

I do bow hunt. Have not lost an animal yet. But it is in South Africa on Bow hunting farms with bow blinds on ground level and shots at 20 yards. Hoyt 70lbs Rage 2 blade on Easton arrows. From Axis to Bloodline arrows.

    The Perfect Plains Game Rifle

Smaller could have worked most of the time, but i just felt that with gun, I must be able to take any shot, at any angle, at any reasonable distance. Like I said, is my large PG rifle, but I mainly hunt Kudu, have done 2 Gemsbok with it, and hope to do a Blue wildebeest and a Eland soon. Did the...

    The Perfect Plains Game Rifle

I think multi species in Limpopo or Kalahari might almost be an easier answer. With the vast difference in Kudu hunting conditions a dedicated Kudu hunting rifle is a tough one. What I have used in Limpopo when I stayed there did not work when I moved to the other side of the country. 80 meters...

    338/06 or 25/06?

Why must it be a 06? I don't know the specific firearm sorry. But if you are going to replace the barrel you can do any caliber.

For me sticks is fine on its own, but put wobbly legs, out of breath, uneven footing and an actual animal in the mix, and it becomes a whole lot more difficult.

People is trying to overthink this. If the animal does not die from one shot within a reasonable time or distance it is wounded. Yes if you shot it again while running away you and only you will know if it was necessary. If it would have died it was not wounded. If you saved yourself hours worth...

Yes, if it did not die from the first shot, or would have in the next 2 minutes it is not a kill shot. Sprinting of and then dying 100 or 20 further from one shot.

Heart lung is dead on its feet, your second example is what it is about. And you are right, it happens to all of us. Little too high, little too low, too far back or angle off. Part of hunting.

English is my 2nd language and thought that is as clear. sorry about that. ' Have you wounded a animal in Africa that needed a follow up shot? not an insurance shot." Actual calibers used for Buffalo by AH members

i really thought that due to cost and availability and general usefulness the ratio between 375 and .4 would be much bigger in Favour of the 375, but it seems we have a lot of people here that really go all out if they know they are going after buffalo.

yes i wanted to make it more interesting but ran out of voting options, you can only have 10. it would be nice to know like with Dave's story what actually happened. sometime at a distance on hilly country just a small mis judge in angle can make a huge difference in bullet path. i always aim...

I had a kudu when I was in high school, shot felt good with a 6.5x57, on my way to where he stood, I see him again and go for the kil, shot in the neck, but only a flesh wound, tracked it for 2 days over 2 farms and could not catch up with him. a Week later I found bull no 1 where I shot him and...

if you hunt long enough mistakes and bad shots will happen, sometimes it is in the training years, a lot of times it is when we are overconfident. I don't think bad luck plays a big role. Most of the times it will boil down to human error. either shot, choices made regarding equipment ext...

I love his work, i have a canvas and Leather sling from him on my 375 Safari Express, still need some other accessories, so will definitely stop by him soon. Might even add this to my wish list. Try and convince me the 243 is actually useful

I grew up in the Limpopo bushveld, where shots is 60-80yards. And there the 243 sucks. No penetration. But it is all do do with the speed. I had a 6x45 that outperformed any 243 in that area, with cheap cup and core 100gr Hornady round nose i got 85-95% weight retention. But it was @2300fps...

Yes I am local, and the type of camo we wear is like Boots and Stetsons in the states, it is like our National Stepping out gear :A Camping:. It is not military camo, but like your Real tree or Mossey oak that they use on Bows.
