    500 schuler magazine

I'd start with a standard bottom metal as Schuler did. I'm glad you asked because I had never had this rifle apart so it was a good learning experience for me as well to take a close look inside the build of the action! Here you can see the extension was welded and filed to the bottom metal...

    500 schuler magazine

I own this rifle. This one also has the little tongue inside the magazine to hold the top cartridge over against the left wall. It's a much better method than the double clips Westley Richards used on their 425s in my opinion. I owned a very nice 425 with the clips. There is a lot of work in...

    Rigby Highland Stalker 9.3X62

I guess I'm just a bit old school regarding high end bolt guns. Mauser had different barrel profiles as well as differing bottom metal and magazine dimensions for different classes and design/dimensions of cartridges. I guess that is one reason why the Oberndorf Mausers are held in such high...

    Farquharson 450/400

I'd take a note from Tom there with his hammer double. "Nice" is a subjective term but if you are a single shot aficionado, I'd think that a double with hammers would be quite appealing - really two single shots in one package! For my money, nothing compares with the quality and actual usability...

    Rigby Highland Stalker 9.3X62

I'm sure you will like the 9.3. The greatest criticism I have of the Rigby Highland Stalker is the use of one barrel profile for the range of chamberings. The 9.3, being the largest bore offered, makes for a better package than a 275 with the same profile. This all so the inletting of the stocks...

    What Is Your Dream Rifle?

I've seen some very nice Duane Weibe 500s but years ago, there was a Benny Laubscher 500 available here in the States that was THE perfect 500 Jeffery. Unfortunately, I was selling off big bore bolt guns so passed - wish I hadn't...

Cast Bullets. An alternative to jacketed bullets

Ive shot 405gr cast (powder coated and lubed) as well as paper patched in my 400. They shoot well using Varget and 4198, even black powder, but never did take any game with them. There are lots of pistol bullets available as well for plinking.

Question about Backer rod in large volume cases

That is what I use for my nitro for black and reduced loads. You may want the 5/8" for the 500 Jeff - thats what I used in my 577/500. Also, I normally twist the backer rod into the case down to the powder and trim even with the mouth letting the bullet compress it as it's being seated. Just...

    The Art of Robert Bateman

Some original Bateman paintings (and Seerey-Lesters) sold at a recent auction here in Colorado. I went to the preview and was very impressed. Prices quickly surpassed my budget so was pleased to score a Green Heron bronze for a good price...

    Wanted Farquaharson .500 Cal Rifle

Rookhawk, I think your numbers are fairly close. As far as I know, of the 974 Gibbs Farquharsons, most were Match Rifles and what are known as Military Match Rifles or Military Breechloaders as they are also known. Probably 375-450 of the total are of these two categories. The Sporting Rifles...

    Wanted Farquaharson .500 Cal Rifle

The Farquharson was the original underlever falling block hammerless rifle patented by John Farquharson. The first rifles were made by George Gibbs as he was the first to license the patent from Farquharson (or maybe he was a part owner of the patent). The Ruger No.1 is visually similar but very...

    Wanted Farquaharson .500 Cal Rifle

When you say, 1897 Farquharson, what do you mean exactly? Pre 1898 antique classification? Also, many use the name "Farquharson" as a generic name for many old English falling blocks, not just actual Farquharson actioned rifles. Some dealers even do that. I have an Army & Navy 500 Nitro on a...

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever?

Totally agree. Here are four that could be candidates. 461 Gibbs Farquharson Webley 1902 in 500NE Webley 1897 by Lang James Purdey 450 (A. Henry patent)

I've had a thing for the original Oberndorf Mauser and pre war sporting rifles for some time. Have sold quite a few including a great 350 Rigby, 6.5 Portugese TypeA and a 7mm Daniel Fraser, a really nice 425 Westley, a couple Mahillon 416 Rigbys (one prewar on a square bridge Magnum Mauser...
