A lot of commentary here from folks who know more than I do on the subject. My thinking is at this price point what would be the harm in getting an agreement with the seller to see how the rifle shoots pre purchase. 4 rounds at 50 yards would mean a lot....
I’m a newbie here and there are others who will provide expert opinions. DRs must be fired standing, usually off of sticks to: A. Protect the rifle from damage. B. In some cases protect the shooter in the case of heavy nitro rifles. C. To mimic the conditions of a hunting shot. These types...
Really an academic question. I would never shoot a full nitro load in my 10.5 lb rifle. I would consider spicing up the load a bit to improve my regulated load but I am pretty close now.
Thanks, Tom
I was thinking both new and vintage you would consider. I’m not sure if Greener is currently building rifles. I bought my first double a few months ago. A Greener top lever in 577 BPE. The experience has been a blast. The accumulation of all the stuff to go with it, load development and...
I figured it has limited capability as you say. These are relics as you say but at the right price I would say worth saving. I am mainly concerned about the history and scarcity of these rifles. Also, I noted this one is later in the year than mine and says grade 413 vs list 413 as mine...
Not sure if you noticed but there is another greener 577 out there for sale on guns international. Similar to mine, same year but 2 3/4 chamber. Cracked stock that looks bad enough for a restock IMO.
I need an old school style sling mount like this one for the stock of my rifle. Any information on how to source one of these would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom
Im new at this but the recoil of my .577 is different from each barrel. Triggers are different too. My left barrel recoils straight back where the rt barrel has a twisting moment. My rear trigger is heavier. I guess with folks having different ammo in each chamber that would drive the...
Cal, This is on my other thread but I will repeat it here. My rifle did regulate. The load was a 650 woodliegh with 76g of 4198. My rifle is 10.5 lbs. I arranged concierge service with Lonnie at Superior. It was a great experience all around.
Thanks,
Tom
You are correct. I was time limited. I feel the individual barrels are grouping well. It may be possible with more time to bring the two groups closer but I admit I am happy as hell..
Thanks.
Update: I have the old girl going again. With much good advice from forum members and two days of concierge service from Lonnie at Superior ammo I was able to work up a regulation load. Lonnie cooked up a recipe that regulated with the first 4 shots. Target at 50 yds using the one hundred...
Thanks Cal, My goal is to go lighter with a load that will regulate. I want to respect the age of the rifle and acknowledge at 12lbs it’s light.
Thanks, Tom
Russ and Rookhawk, I appreciate you guys taking an interest. I have learned much from this forum and I feel a responsibility to honor the integrity of the rifle based on its original design limitations. I am feeling better as time goes by the rifle wasn’t damaged in previous years from...
Thats a lot and Thanks. Im a little embarrassed at my ignorance in all of this but I am learning fast. Its hard for me to ask this in public but which one do I have? I think its the .577BPE. Thanks.
Hi all, I am a new safari rifle owner. A dream come true. I now have a Greener .577 express. No plans for an Africa hunt. Im a collector really. Im from Florida. I am a commercial pilot after a career in the USMC as a harrier pilot including a 3 year exchange tour with Sea Harriers in the...
Much thanks everyone. Considering everything I am thinking no more than 1600-1700 fps and not heavier than 650 gr. Any suggestions on professionals to help me come up with a load? Thanks.
Thanks everyone. I would like to come up with a load using modern powder that is safe and respects the nature of my rifle. I feel my limitations are the wt, stock, and ability to regulate. The rifle is 12 lbs and may be reproofed for a full load, that full load is useless and could damage the...
Russ, thanks for that info. I would love to build the individual history of this rifle so I am very interested in any information I could get from what may be a previous owner. My history is vague. If you are able to help me connect those dots I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Agreed. It has been to a good smith as of yesterday. No plans to hunt but if I did sell it with some AMMO I would like everything to be documented so the new owner would know exactly what they had. I feel it will stay in the family collection for some time though. Thanks.
I would consider shooting the rifle to regulate. My concern is the rifles age and the fact it is built lighter than most .577s at 12 lbs. It has been restocked at least once. The current stock is well done in American walnut and appears thinner in the wrist than I would expect from a rifle...
