    Memorial Day

Memorial Day provokes the imagination, pondering what went through the minds of those like Albert Munro, who parked his Higgins boat at Guadalcanal so that it blocked Japanese machine gun fire while the other Higgins boats evacuated an entire battalion. The short easy answer is that he made the...

Third Bite/Greener Crossbolt On Double Rifles. (Or Lack Thereof)

Well, I never had a gun just pop open on the shot, so your point about the greener cross bolt preventing that is certainly well taken.

Best compact Binocular in $1000.00 price category

One fellow on BirdForum said of the Leica Ultravid 8x20, "I almost thought I was looking through a pair of mid-sized cheaper binoculars." He meant it as a compliment. Yes, the compacts struggle to keep up with the performance of the larger glass, but that is exactly why you want the best in a...

Best compact Binocular in $1000.00 price category

Better take him up on it--ultravids are the best 8x20 I've ever looked through. When I want to read the most knit-picking reviews on optics, I go to BirdForum. Those people are koo-koo for cocoa puffs about their binoculars. I have read great reviews there about the UV Leicas, (and many others)

Well, it was on my bucket list to go to Canada, esp. this year, but due to thoughts about Canadians disliking Americans over "51st state" issues, we went to Tahoe instead (also on my bucket list) Sad, as I caught a much smaller lake trout than I envisioned being available in Canada.

Sako 100 - In stock - First look

Bottom of butt-stock reminds me of the synthetic Ruger "boat-paddle" style. Adjustable comb is a daring addition that just might be practical for all scope configurations. Function--waiting for a report.

    Stl Tornado

Same tornado that hit our house--with us inside it!--erased a trailer house. The owners found less than a trash bag full of any belongings, though the washing machine tub liner was way up in a tree over a branch. Took three months for some neighbors to get it totally cleaned up. Condolences.

    Aid to Zambia Cut

Correct, AND the communists have already had a taste of how Africa receives communism, i.e. Mozambique back in the day. The collective/community farms were not worked. Men had rather run off into the bush than work in a garden meant to benefit everyone. They will take from government, but not...

    Black Walnut Rifle Blank

Not only tiny holes, but sunken areas for no external reason sometimes happen, almost like an internal collapse of some kind, and much more common on kiln dried. Embedded objects like nails usually cross the annular rings and are identifiable, and therefore avoidable. Another reason not to cut...

    Black Walnut Rifle Blank

Surely you saved more than one for yourself...do both projects and squirrel away more for later projects. I hope you had him save you the crotch wood--should result in a match pair. And did the tracker scratch it all up while sharpening it? (on a flat rock?) I have become too vain to scratch up the sides of my own knives with sloppy sharpening. But it makes like more difficult being so careful. Maybe knives shouldn't be so nice you can't use them in the real world.

Who makes a good CRF builders action these days?

I always thought that my Sako safari was controlled round feed, but apparently it does not meet the standard of "true CRF" even though it does take hold of the round and control it. You can even operate it upside down. But alas, it's just not good enough to make the cut....NOT!

Smokin' .22 hulls and the smell of squirrel hollows. Grass fires in Africa. Two cycle outboard motor exhaust and fog on the water. Smell of baby pups with their eyes barely open. Neighbor's BBQ grill firing up back home. Hot canvas on a tent exposed to Texas summer sun.
