MOZAMBIQUE: Buffalo With TSALA HUNTING SAFARIS

Apart from having dreamed for years about a buffalo hunt in a remote area, not a lot of planning went into this one. One day in May this offer popped up: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/mozambique-buffalo-hunt-special-tsala-hunting-safaris.82115/ After checking a few details with Rouan...

Hmm, I hope that riflepermits.com have used the correct form. I have a message from them that I'm pre-approved for entry into SA. But the doc I filled out and sent to them is definitely marked as "SAPS 520". I guess I'll know on Monday morning...

    Safari Bullet Company bullets?

It sound that this is the same (or at least similar) design concept as North Fork and also the Rhino bullets. Of course, things such as the shape and size of the leaded nose may differ, as well as jacket thickness and at which velocities they are engineered to open. And not to forget the...

Muzzle Energy vs Recoil vs Rifle Weight for Dangerous Game

Yeah, I think that it might simply be a combination of what you all said (@sgt_zim , @skydiver386 , @grand veneur ). A very powerful cartridge, sometimes (often?) used by inexperienced hunters, in perhaps too lightly built rifles. So it got a bit of a bad reputation - both by the shooters...

Muzzle Energy vs Recoil vs Rifle Weight for Dangerous Game

Well, I've wondered about that a little... I haven't shot either of the following, but they all seem pretty similar in calibre, bullet weights, velocities and thus, energy and recoil (only looked at numbers from Wikipedia). How come that the first one of these is .... frowned upon a little, but...

Muzzle Energy vs Recoil vs Rifle Weight for Dangerous Game

Haven't had the pleasure to sample too many of the bigger bores, but I once had the questionable joy (to say the least) of pulling the trigger on a .585 Nyati. Let's call it 'sporty' recoil-wise, even if it was a quite heavy gun. :) So I keep shooting the 404, and get slightly better at it each...

Muzzle Energy vs Recoil vs Rifle Weight for Dangerous Game

@C.W. Richter - the list does not *really* need to be expanded with various other 416's, 450's etc. This is just math. If you know the calibre, bullet weight and muzzle velocity, then TKO and muzzle energy can be calculated. If you also know the weight of the powder charge, and the weight of...

    Another Computer Security PSA

The data stored on your computer is most likely already encrypted (e.g. BitLocker), and most communication in and out of it also is, e.g. https. So your data is fairly safe if your computer is stolen, or if someone were to eavesdrop on your network comms. But many attacks will happen because...

Yeah, the Rock Chucker is a bit too small.. I put my case in the shell holder, and then guide bullet into the seater die, before setting it down onto the case mouth. Another Buffalo Shot Angle

Green (especially the right edge of green) looks like it would hit the heart, or top of it, no? Red looks too far to the right, since he is at an angle. Would a shot at the same height, but more to the left, say straight down from the eye, hit the spine as it dips down? Yellow looks risky -...

    Sako 85 - Discontinued?

That would be the model AV, probably manufactured late 80's/early 90's. Sako's serial number data.. well.. leaves a bit to be desired. Regardless of that, it is essentially the same rifle as the L61R, which from what documentation I have seems to have come out in 1970 (serial no 1). Some...

Current state of Dangerous Game optics?

If I've correctly understood (and I might not) the optics discussions on another forum, it seems like 'eyebox' and maybe 'field-of-view' are the culprits for the ever-growing oculars on rifle scopes. Since nobody want to look through a straw, we will have to live with the larger ocular bells...

    6.8 Western for Africa?

Someone probably has. But does it really bring anything new to the table? A 30-06, 7x57 or even the newcomer 308Win could do the same thing. It would probably be seen as a bit light for bigger PG like kudu, zebra, wildebeest, eland etc. Maybe not allowed for that purpose in all countries. If...

    Magnum primers for 308?

I think that Normas loading recipes are 100% LRM primers, regardless of whether they are 'needed' or not. It can't possibly hurt (well, if you're into bench rest shooting or a similar extreme-precision sport, I guess you could argue against it), and you could probably decrease your load by a...

Unfortunately this is true. The official numbers for last year were 63,024 (July 1st 2022 - June 30th 2023). This is down by ~10,000 from the previous year. During the 90's into ~2020, the annual harvest was between 80,000 and 100,000. Then again, in the 60's it was only 30,000. Peak...

9.3x62 - Large or Large Magnum Primers?

I use LRM for everything, including 6.5x55. That one uses a slow powder, though for the rather heavy-for-calibre 156g bullets. I think Norma's reloading data is all based on LRM as well.

    Scope recommendations on a .404J

The Norma 'African PH' line are made with nickel-plated cases. However, I think that they exclusively use Woodleigh Weldcores, and the bullets in that picture look very much like A-Frames to me. Slow burning powder and a 23" barrel

I see that @Mark A Ouellette was faster than me in replying. Typing on the phone is sloooow :-) Yes, it would probably not do much difference, but it will do some, even if the majority of the extra powder burns after the bullet has left the barrel. The extra powder takes up space, which means...

Slow burning powder and a 23" barrel

Yes it does. Ish. But the pressure curve is different as the peak pressure is reached sooner. And it could get into dangerously high pressures if too much of a too fast powder is used. If you load e.g. a 7mm RM with a pistol powder (i.e. fast) you could only load the case to so full before it...

    3 Ruger Rifles For Sale

Very nice wood. Not too familiar with Ruger in general, or the "express" model in particular. Would that be standard on a factory rifle, or have the stocks been upgraded afterwards? Also, I thought that the M77 had a tang safety, but from these picture it does not seem like that.

    Question On Heart Shots

Mixed results - a few of the deer I've shot in the heart/top of the heart have dropped on the spot. Early stages of potential 1st safari

Probably not much difference, but your bog pod might be a bit sturdier/steadier than most other tripods. I believe that quad-sticks are also getting more common. Takes slightly longer to set up (an extra second), but is super-steady. Does not allow for as much horizontal panning, though.

I don't yet have a lot of experience with the NF bullets, but when we spoke on the Swedish Game Fair 2 years(?) ago, you recommended the PP bullet in 404J for the local big game, as it will open up a little quicker in softer targets than the SS. I bought a box or two to try them out. Loaded...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

Interesting, but anecdotal so to speak. These particular ones are almost the same length, but either the 375 is loaded longer, or the 416 shorter, than allowed by CIP/SAAMI specs. It is quite possible that a 375 with a long bullet, but still within spec, is longer than a 416 loaded with a...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

The 416 Rigby is a considerably longer cartridge if I'm not mistaken. Max COL for the Rigby is 95.25 mm (3.750"), and for the 375HH it's 91.4mm (3.600"). The empty case is not that much different in length, though. So I guess that it would be possible to build a 416 Rigby rifle on an...
