Winter has set in. Good time to take inventory and think about new builds.

    Mauser 98 Builds

I haven't got these back, and I'm already wanting to build another... Of course, part of the problem is the time of year. We've got about 24" of standing snow, and it's cold, so I'm stuck inside mostly. I went through the gun cabinet yesterday, bore snaked and wiped everything down. That...

    Mauser 98 Builds

ChrisG, One is definitely getting an ebony fore end tip, and now I'm on the fence for the reasons you mentioned. I wanted one of them to look more nostalgic, but I agree, I don't think there will be enough contrast to achieve the proper look. I'm not doing the work myself. I have an awesome...

    Mauser 98 Builds

It's been a while since I've posted/updated on these. Got them back from the "Smith" a few weeks ago. It was a very fast turn around. Barrels fitted, sights installed, Timney Triggers, re-profiled trigger guards, bolt handles re-shaped, safeties converted to 2 position side throw, and...

    Bear rug

Layers are your friend. Cool/cold morning and evening, nice in the day. If it rains, expect gooey, sticky, miserable mud. I'd bring a rod and some lures. Don't take up much space, and so long as it hasn't rained and blown everything out, you'll be good. I'm hoping the rain holds off till...

Sestoppelman, Have you seen the log deck at the old plywood mill? Went past there about 3 weeks ago, it was massive!

    Bear rug

I'm just a bit west of Kamiah. Just went through that area a few weeks ago trout fishing. Really pretty, rugged country. The nights are getting cool, and it's getting dark around 1900. You're probably going to pass through Pierce, stop at Ms Lilly's for a buger, or Chubby's Pizza if you're...

    Triggers

So, I have the exact same rifle. Mine is Circa 1986. It's been a proven workhorse, and shot stuff across the continent. As for accuracy, check the fit of the barrel to the stock. Mine had a slight rub, and once I cleaned it up, it was even better. I also shoot/prefer 140 gr Hornady. I...

I'm not a fan of him, but Clinton 42 lost the codes - gave them to a staffer I believe, until there was an inventory..... I also recall under the same administration, picking up a Navy Commander, (and giving him a ride to the AF1), who had been left at his hotel - carrying the football, while...

Joe, I didn't say what you're function was, I said why you were hired. Seen it too many times with GO/FO. Maybe you're different, but I'm sure the Defense Contractor paid you well to run their unit. Yes, the services do have creep in their requirements, But maybe if the original request...

    Ideas for our resident artisan's

Hey Rook, I use the same lump hardwood/mesquite charcoal. I use an electric charcoal starter instead of the chimneys. They run about $20.00, and I replace them about every 2 years. Maybe worth a try??

WG 455, Sorry to hear about your loss and situation. Going to be really honest, and it may sting - sorry. What qualifications other than school might you have? And if I read this correctly, you've lived at home all/most of this time, and you're 31-ish? 1st, totally agree with Carson above...

    Counterfeit Land Rovers: Who knew?????

Well, Since the OP was about counterfeit LR's, I suppose posting a Lexus is/was appropriate. It can be a "re-badged" anything, still isn't a Defender. I'm willing to bet you'd trade all that posh for a proper older Defender 110. Why, because it's a LR Defender. Period. Same reason why...

    Counterfeit Land Rovers: Who knew?????

300TDI is the best engine. Next is the TD5. I have had 200TDI's, and they don't compare. Wow, 125K!!! Dang!!! Maybe I should sell some of mine! If you're looking for a 90, I have a friend who is bringing one over. LHD, in really good shape. He may want to sell as he also just picked up a 110.

Bear got into my bee hives, pistol suggestion?

I've got some .410 rubber/riot shells. Use them on nuisance cows. Seems to remove them from the property, without anything more than psychological injury. Maybe load a couple of them, and possibly a slug, just in case he decides to close the distance? (depending if you have a .410, and the...

    Counterfeit Land Rovers: Who knew?????

Hahahaha! I drove mine to work occasionally. I always left the keys in her. I'd leave a note on the windscreen asking the last driver to let me know where he parked her, so I could find her and drive her home at day's end. Of course, I cou;d have simply have followed the oil drips to her...

    Canada's proposed new gun laws...

So, I have Canadian friends, and have heard the silliness that abounds. What I don't know, is if anything can be done to stop this? Legislators, PM's, represneaitives? I'm just not smart enough on Canada Politics, but I find it hard to believe the PM can "recommend" something, and it's...

    Counterfeit Land Rovers: Who knew?????

Depends on what you want. Diesel and Torques are better than HP and Gas for getting through stuff. Do you want it because it's "Cool or Vogue", or are you actually going to use it? If you can't find/afford an old landy, look at early body styles you like. Cummins id making a drop in engine...

    Counterfeit Land Rovers: Who knew?????

Sorry Mate, Have to disagree. Everything else is a copy of the Land Rover. Every Jeep owner buys a Jeep because they couldn't afford a Landy! As for Lexus, wasn't even a blink in the eye of LR. You want a "Chelsea Tractor" buy a Rangie, otherwise keep the Asian stuff for tuners and kids...

    Making Smallgoods Salamis etc

I had a "Masterbuilt" smoker for a while. When it worked good, it was pretty flawless, but when the digital control unit started acting wonky, had to place close attention to it. We do up big batches, and as someone else mentioned, stuff them in the vacuum seal bags, and put to rest in the...

Converting a Mauser 98k to a different calibre

Yup, You do it because you want to. To bring an old rifle back to life and use. I'm in the process of doing two of them right now. A full build, with stock will probably run in the $2K area, depending on who does it and what you chose to put into it. You'll have a classic, personal rifle...

    Whisky appreciation

So, American "Whiskey" is different than the post origination. For Whisky, Mcallan can't be beat. 2ND is Glenmorangie, and it's very close. Try the Frey Ranch out of Nevada, or the new Willett Straight Rye. Both really good.

    Sidearm when rifle hunting?

Tounge in cheek rules of a "Gunfight", but a lot can be applied to hunting, especially Dangerous Game... I've seen a lot of posts so far where people say they don't carry a sidearm. It's a personal choice, and rules/regulations come into play. I don't care what caliber/make/model is your...

    Mauser 98 Builds

Yup, can be a pain, and some of the German one's were/are dang near impossible to de-fuze. If I recall, you have to turn two mechanisms in different directions, at the same time. Whenever possible, best to blast in place, but that's dependent on what's next door...

    Mauser 98 Builds

:) I'm keeping the calibers a secret, as mentioned, but I am enjoying the suggestions. Since I own a 280REM, I probably wouldn't go 280AI, nothing wrong with it, and honestly not sure which is "better" - relative term obviously. I've got several 24-26" rifles, so want these to be light...

If you are in the area, visit the Menin Gate (Ypres) at 2000 hrs. They do a last post (Taps) at that time. Get there earlier. It's only a short ceremony, and I believe it's been conducted every night since WWI, except during German occupation. But it's tasteful and proper. The history that...

Vertigo, Not sure if it was the West Vieteren Abbey, but it was trappist, and I recall they made beer until the well ran dry in the summer months, and it was limited to"locals" only. I did find that the Belgiums would literally makle a beer out of anything that grows, even thistles!!!! All...
