I would use the Northfork 400 percussion point. Specifically made for cats and maybe more importantly are actually in stock right now on reloading international.
I have used NF exclusively for big game in multiple calibers for almost 20 years and they have never let me down. The original owner suggested 380 gn for 404 and they have worked great for plains game and buffalo. Unfortunately I was low on stock when they went out of business. I have enough for...
I haven’t bought one in a few years so I’m probably a little behind on the price. They usually have a DSC show special that cuts the price a bit or throws in a scope. 12k with upgraded wood sounds about right.
How much is the seller asking? For 10k you can get a new one from Chris and pick your wood. Beautiful wood definitely adds to the enjoyment of hunting with a fine rifle. That having been said, I think the pictures still don’t do it justice. Lighting is better but it’s still somewhat low...
That’s a Martini Express rifle. They don’t make them in matte finish. The pictures are low resolution in poor lighting. I have 3 of them, my hunting partners have 2 more and I’ve handled a few dozen. I’ve never seen one with bad wood. This one might not be their best but I guarantee if you saw...
A few more bullets from our last couple hunts collected by @seth hollenbach. 375 and 458 North Fork softs were perfect as usual. 375 were from 375 HH with MV of 2450 recovered from various plainsgame. 458 bullet from 458 Lott with MV 2200 recovered from cape buffalo. North Fork solids deformed...
We talked to John every year at DSC and replenished our bullet supply. Great guy. Certainly kept the quality high. Hopefully the Swedish folks will do equally well. I’ve been emailing with them and they say a large shipment is ready, just waiting on paperwork.
I started using North Fork back in 2004 when you could call the shop and talk to Mike Brady for an hour about his bullets. I’ve loaded them for 9 different rifles and accuracy has been exceptional in every one. Terminal performance is outstanding. I couldn’t wish for anything more out of a...
375 300 grain North Fork soft. All fired from 375 HH at 2590 FPS. Don’t have the exact data on which bullet goes with which animal but all were recovered from various plains game including zebra, wildebeest, eland etc.
I’d be interested to hear how the regulation with handloading went. Obviously the results are outstanding! My buddy and I each have an 89b in 500 NE being delivered soon. His is here in the states and will be here this week and mine mid March. We will start the load process and I have 570 grain...
Trick I use setting up dies to roll crimp in two steps and keeping the die set up (assuming brass is trimmed to uniform length etc.) Using a dummy round, back the seater plug way out and set the die to crimp in the usual way. Lock the locking ring in position. Take the die out and put a spacer...
I agree that the beautiful long neck on the 404 probably provides enough tension by itself but I just wouldn’t feel right about not crimping a dangerous game round.
I’ve done a roll crimp with my Redding die using 400 grain Barnes TSX bullets. They have a crimping grove just proximal to the ogive that’s in perfect position. North forks don’t have a grove in the right spot. It’s my understanding that the Lee FCD is the only one that will effectively crimp...
Heym 89b 500 NE. Was supposed to be here around November but Covid backed everything up. Now it should be here early March. Keeping my fingers crossed because we have a bull elephant/buffalo hunt scheduled for late May in the Savé.
I have used red dots without magnification on ARs out to 500 yards effectively. You’ll be surprised at what you can do with them.
Ordered a doctor sight for my Heym 505 and wouldn’t hesitate to shoot out to 150 yards.
Will probably try the trijicon rmr on my Heym double when it gets here in a...
I’m using North Fork 380 grain bullets and there’s no crimping grove high enough for a roll crimp. I could trim the brass back considerably but don’t want to have to do that.
Lee has stopped custom die production at the moment and I really need a Lee factory crimp die in 404 for an upcoming hunt. Will pay a premium or even rent it anyone is agreeable.
375 H&H. For your first DG rifle, 375 H&H is perfect. Will handle everything in Africa and is easy to shoot. If you start hunting elephant or Buffalo a lot, you can add a bigger rifle later.
I’ve never planned a specific hunt for hippo but if the opportunity for a dry land hippo presents itself while hunting elephant or buffalo, I’d definitely take it.
