    North Fork Technologies

I ordered some 175 gr SS for my 280 AI directly from North Fork on Monday, they were in my mail box today. Can't wait to test these, then take the missus back to @Limcroma Safaris so she can get her zebra. She says she *only* wants a zebra. But if you give a moose a muffin, pretty soon he's...

    Bringing Reloading Components to Africa

You need to be really careful on bringing reloading components to RSA. I was told by my outfitter that I'd need a license, from SAPS I'd imagine, to buy brass, powder, or primers; but not to buy projectiles. So you're probably safe bringing in bullets.

Full transparency - I absolutely despise UA and Delta. They have a history with SAPS and with hunters. The missus and I just hunted Limpopo the back half of August, we just got back to Houston a week ago. My best friend flew UA through EWR. He and a number of other hunters arrived at JNB to...

I have come to the conclusion that "New Guys" are welcome, BUT......

As the resident cybersecurity pro on this forum, new guys (with fewer than 5 or 10 posts) trying to sell things raises alarm bells with everybody. We don't have a lot of scammers show up here, but still far too many of them; and most of the stuff sold here via the classifieds is of fairly high...

.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

Dear God, another "270 is a flat shooter." Every modern bottle neck cartridge is "flat shooting" out to around 300 yards. And they'll all do something a 270 won't do: shoot bullets heavier than 160 grains. Mass is king when it comes to penetration, not MV. If velocity were everything, we'd...

.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

No "supposedly" about it. If you can even find a steady supply of 160 bullets in .277, that's the longest/heaviest a standard 10 twist 270 Win will stabilize. 170 - 175 gr 7mm is the bees knees.

375 point of impact different bullet weights

Fair enough, then. I suspect your factory loads on the 300s probably are in the neighborhood of 2400 fps, maybe even 2375. My 286 gr A Frames at 2475 are a bit flatter than what you're getting. If you know somebody with a chrony, it'd be worth it to put 4 or 5 bullets across it. In all...

Hypothetically Speaking... Which 9.3 in a custom ZG47?

Yessir. If a hand loader takes advantage of the generous free bore/leade cut into most X62s, they're every bit the equal of 375. I can't really see the utility in reaching past 250 or 300 yards with something bigger than 338. Inside 300 yards, it'll put the smack down on anything non-DG.

375 point of impact different bullet weights

I saw that. Looks like the distances are in meters and you're measuring drop in inches. On the TTSX, for example, if I use 185 yards as a zero, the arc indicated in your notes doesn 't comport with the calculator. But if I use 185 meters (202 yards), then the data line up nicely with a MV of...

375 point of impact different bullet weights

It isn't that harmonics, BC, and MV have no effect, it's that there's no practical effect on ballistic arc inside 300 yards. Harmonics affect group size, but once the bullet exits the crown, it's all aerodynamic efficiency and MV. We are talking about 375H&H - I'm assuming a medium barrel...

  25. sgt_zim

375 point of impact different bullet weights

KISS is important here. IMO, it's not worth the effort to keep track of the arc on 2 different loads for the same rifle. The energy difference between them is a complete wash, so you're only really dealing with different arcs; and assuming you use the same zero for both, there just isn't a...

Hypothetically Speaking... Which 9.3 in a custom ZG47?

Lessons learned from having reloaded 9.3x62 for a few years. The published SAAMI COAL of 3.291" is WAY short for most rifles chambered in X62. I'm shooting 286 gr SAF at a chrony'd 2475 fps, with zero pressure signs - my COAL for that load for my recent trip to Limpopo was 3.325". You could...

375 point of impact different bullet weights

There is no practical difference in ballistic arc between a 300 gr A Frame at 2500 fps and a 250 gr TTSX at 2700 fps. Even if you could get the TTSX up to 2800 fps, it just doesn't move the needle to an appreciable degree. With a 200 yard zero A Frame is 2.6" high at 100, 10.5" low at 300 250...

    The perfect Buffalo Medicine

While I didn't get an exit wound on my buff from my 9.3x62 on about a 30º quartering away, I'm pretty sure the 286 gr A Frame I put in her absolutely obliterated her heart. She gave her death bellow in under 20 seconds. It's difficult to argue against Swift or Barnes.

    What do I buy?

A 286 gr 9.3 bullet fired at 2450 will have a near identical ballistic arc as a 180 gr 308 Win. That'll easily get you to 300 yards with very little to no holdover adjustment on larger species like gemsbok and wildebeest and still pack quite a thump when it gets there. Hornady SPRP is a great...

My 9.3 performed like a champ last week on Cape Buffalo, zebra (the one in my avatar), and blue wildebeest. I had to put an anchor in the wildebeest, but 1 shot kills on zebra and the buff. Zebra was probably 130 yards, buff about 30, wildebeest about 70 or 80. My PH had a 375 for backup on...

Not that I have any great DG experience with only the one buff cow under my belt, but I can work a bolt as fast as anyone, probably faster than most.
