I’m going back to Africa next year. I’m taking my 45-70. My ph likes the Barnes ammo. Looking at the 2 weights 300or 400. My ph says to pick which works best. I’m not noticing a difference in accuracy. My primary animal is the cape with extras being wildebeest and a gemsbok

. I’m thinking the 400 because it has a little more energy and similar velocity up close. I wanted to talk to someone about this thought and also. If I should take the 300 for the other animals. I don’t want to destroy them. Not much of a chance of +100 yards where I’m going.

The cape? As in Cape buffalo?

Yes

Idk where you are hunting , but most places you can’t take a Cape buffalo with a 45-70. Not legal. But if it was legal, I ain’t doing it. Good way to get killed. Probably not. Probably work just fine. I don’t play games with dangerous games

Why do you want to hunt a Cape Buffalo with a 45-70?

I get the danger. If ph would have said no I would have been out with using it! He say right load with proper shot it will work. Any thoughts on the other animals with it that round

It’s a perfectly fine round. Just not a Cape buffalo round. Will work great on plains game short range. 100 yds in or so. I’m not one who believes in long range shooting. Hell, I haven’t shot anything but a bow in the states for over 20 years. Will probably work great on the buffalo as well.

But that buff will turn and run after your first shot, and you’ll try to stick another one or two in him as he’s going away. Your 45-70 won’t make it through the rumen. Or you’ll foolishly take your initial shot head on and you’ll stick it in the brisket and it won’t reach vitals.

Hopefully your PH will sort it out on the follow up, cause you can bet your ass HE won’t be sporting a 45-70, and there, you’ve left a mess for another man to clean up. Embarrassing.

Re read my comments from last night and I see they came across as quite harsh. My apologies. Maybe a little too much wine

Best of luck on your safari, and if you do decide to use the 45-70, be extra selective about that 1st shot. I’d try to slip it in right behind that front shoulder, in the crease. I’m sure your PH will go over that with you. Best!
