Interesting, could you elaborate what parks you visit? I agree that some parks are very busy (Nairobi national park) and not all animals seem that healthy (remember one poor looking lion in Tsavo) but I would not say it applies to all places. Ol Pejeta was not very crowded at least two years ago and animals seemed to be doing well, at least to me. You can drive around hours and not see another safari car or people. Amboseli we visited 3 years ago just after the drought but even then wildlife seemed to be fine.

But I have no experience from parks outside of Kenya. For sure outside of parks wildlife is more or less gone...

Ol Pejeta is private, hence well managed in my opinion, The Mara is awesome but the most poorly operated in my humble opinion. Just too many people interfering with wildlife. They are all nice,I love Amboseli, Tsavo, Nakuru etc but nothing compared to Ngorogoro, Serengeti, or many of the parks managed by African parks in other countries. Lately I have been taking guest to private reserves, costs a bit more but worth it.
 
This is also a problem with national parks in US. Loving them to death. When I worked for NPS I preferred the smaller units. The "Crown Jewels" are so overrun it's become a phony dog-and-pony show. How do we make the natural and historic wonders accessible to all without ruining what makes them wonders? Too often it becomes about making the resource accessible to financial exploitation. Tourist operations can be every bit as environmentally destructive as mining or gas/oil extraction. A footprint is a footprint.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
