Bad batch of CCI large rifle magnum primers

Adding an update. So after swapping out the firing pin spring I had much better primer strikes, but unfortunately still had 2 out of 17 not fire. Switched to federal primers and loaded 15 and they all went off without a hitch. Pics attached of the 2 that didn’t fire.

FN Winchester model 70 firing pin spring

I may add a washer to mine, a little more spring tension and surface area for the spring to sit against wouldn’t hurt at all.

FN Winchester model 70 firing pin spring

I was going to try it, but I had these springs available and didn’t want to worry about them slowly shrinking back down over time.

FN Winchester model 70 firing pin spring

it seems to be a fairly common problem, I had my 1st FTF after about 50 rounds, And it’s been around 10% FTF since then. I think the factory springs were just weaker then advertised as I’ve seen a few guys says they were also in the 18-20 lb range. How’s the bolt lift and safety operation...

Bad batch of CCI large rifle magnum primers

You were right on the money, the stock spring was only measuring 20lbs cocked which is pretty borderline IMO when most rifles use a 24-25lb spring. There’s no high pressure springs available through anyone yet, and I really didn’t want another stock spring, so I did some research and found...

FN Winchester model 70 firing pin spring

Hey guys, I’ve got a new model 70 in 416 rem mag, it’s had some issues with light strikes/duds on cci primers, and there isn’t a heavier firing pin spring available yet for the FN/portugal model 70. I found a post somewhere where a guy with a similar Issue had used a modified Remington 700...

Bad batch of CCI large rifle magnum primers

I just loaded 20 rounds of 416 rem mag for my new model 70 safari express and had 3 fail to fire, attempted to fire each 5 times with no luck. Pulled bullets, verified correct powder charge, primers sit 0.007-0.008” below flush of the case head and are dented, firing pin protrusion is 0.055”...

Hey Guys! After a few years of long days and hard work, I’ve paid off my house, have 0 debt and am finally beginning to save for my 1st African safari and hope to go in 2027! My main target would be a Cape buffalo bull, while also leaving additional options open for plains game we come across...
