The question is: what's you're favourite hunting cartridges, not calibres. So, if I had to choose only 3 to cover every eventuality I opine:
22LR,
12g shotgun, and
9.3x62.
Why the 9.3x62 and not the 375HH?
1) It can do everything the 375HH can out to 250yds,
2) It's just as accurate (and has...
Hunter - by J A Hunter
Uganda Safari - by B Herne (a really good, and funny book!!)
Africa's most dangerous - K Robertson (considered by many to be the "Bible" on hunting cape buff.)
That's why I got a .458 Win Mag (the Lott was not commercially available way back then) as my first dG calibre, and have never felt under-gunned ever since. Indeed on one buff hunt in Zambia, my Zim PH was using the camp 375HH. One day his tracker was lagging behind with the 375HH when we came...
In my own experience, Ive taken buff - broadside - using 500gr RNSN over 72gr AR2206H powder. In every case the bullet has been found under the hide on the opposite side.
I reload my own ammunition for hunting, and I've taken a few cape buffalo and hippo using copper-jacketed Woodleigh 500gr RNSNs in my 458. Without exception these projectiles give superb straight line penetration and weight retention (98%).
I've also taken cape buff with my 9.3x62, using...
Congratulations on the wildebeeste!!
Your experience reminds me of my experience with a wildebeeste. Back in 1990 I was 19 and on my first African hunt. One afternoon I was restless in camp, so my PH told me to take a tracker and go see what I could find (my PH stayed in camp reading "Lonesome...
Hi all!
I'm considering doing a buff/tuskless and PG hunt with my son into the Savé Conservancy. Has anyone hunted there recently? And if so, what was the numbers and quality of game like? Thanks in advance.
Pre-1909 rifle calibres I'd take:
470 NE
9.3x62
7x57mm
- and for me that's saying a lot because I love my 30/06 Spr. Of course a 12g, matched to my 470 NE double, would be "de rigueur".
A few hours ago, idly watching YouTube, I found two great videos on the calibre for anyone who's interested:
1) Ron Spomer's: "The surprising 9.3x62 rifle cartridge"
2) Bill Wilson's: "The Ruger 77 in 9.3x62mm: Bill Wilson's favourite hunting rifle".
