When a post failed (Post broke through the notch.) on a Leupold QD ring on one of my 300 Win rifles I went to Alaska Arms QD rings. Absolutely secure and return to zero.
With stout rings like the Alaska Arms the next point of failure becomes the mount base to receiver screws. Most of the...
I took a 13 footer with a spine shot with my 300 Win loaded with a 180gr Barnes TSX. The bullet shattered the spine and was deformed but in one piece when recovered. I was also hunting Leopard and my PH suggested 180gr Nosler partitions for the cat as they expand quickly. My PH felt the Nosler...
On my first hunt the PH jokingly told me they would credit me $10 for each one I killed outright, $20 for each one I wounded and it crawled off, and charge me $50 for anyone I did not shoot at.
I agree with choosing a Heym. That is a Heym 470 in the picture and I have 2 Heym 450s. It has not been mentioned, but the interrupting sears on the Heym will prevent a discharge if the Heym is dropped. To me that is an important feature many doubles do not have.
I have several Dakotas and have not had an issue with any of them. My favorite is in 300 Win Mag. It shoots minute of angle with factory 200gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws if I do my part. I have taken 22 species in Africa with that rifle and load and highly recommend both.
After my previous response I realized it might leave the false impression that safety dictates staying at the airport. That is not the case. I have been to SA in times of reported upheaval and never had safety fears. Obviously, as in any large city; you must be alert and not do anything stupid...
I have stayed at both a couple of times. I find the ambiance at the Africa Sky to be a bit better but the dining room at the Africa Sky was definitely better (Exccellent actually.} than the Afton House. However, with some of the current issues in JB if I were leaving know I would probably stay...
My impediment was not finances it was being able to take more than a few days off. Even after the kids had moved out I could not take off more than a week. I turned 65 in Africa on my first safari and at 79 I plan on at least one more safari.
I have taken 22 species of African game with my 300WM and all but one were taken with factory loaded 200gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. With the exception of a couple where I did not hit exactly where I should have they were one shot kills. No animals lost. That load shoot minute of angle in my...
Both of my 416 Rigbys demonstrate superior accuracy. Like the 375 H&H, the 416 Rugby can be a single rifle for everything choice. I would have no problem taking a 250 yard plains game shot. On my Heym I do have two pre-sighted in scopes in Alaska Arms quick removable rings. Allows change of...
I have both 88Bs and a 89B. Visually the 88B and 89B major differences are obvious and have already been described. On not as obvious difference is the metal on the 88Bs that is "removed" to obtain the square box receiver on the 89B contained cocking indicators on the 88B. With that metal no...
I hit send too quickly. The Dakota is the current factory (Factory available ammunition.). I also have a custom pre-64 Winchester in the original 280AI. Great antelope rifle.
If you would like more information, PM me.
I will be 79 next month and still enjoy the big bores. I was also extremely myopic until I had Excimer surgery years ago. Since then I have experienced tears in both retinas. The left eye when hit by a softball and the right eye after getting too close to the scope on a 300 Win Mag. Since the...
