A little late to the post, and I haven’t hunted Africa with a handgun since Namibia doesn’t allow it. I have taken 6 whitetail with two of my pistols. The first two were with one shot each from a 5” Smith 627. Neither went far, but for some reason I needed bigger, so I went to a .44 mag, .454...

I was with a friend that took a very nice eland 3 weeks ago with a 7mm PRC 175gr Hammer just shy of 3000fps from 170 yards. I would have used a larger caliber, but the eland couldn’t tell the difference. The eland went about 20 yards - he had a very well placed broadside shot on the shoulder.

My experience last year was the taxidermy shipped to DFW via Dulles (IAD), and I picked it up at Coppersmith in Dallas. Coppersmith told me had it entered in Dallas the cost would have been significantly higher. Mine flew from Namibia, so I can’t help much with RSA shippers. Good Luck!
