CZ550 vs Ruger Hawkeye African in 416?

I'd buy the CZ personally. If the synthetic stock is a Bell and Carlson Aramid which was the standard offering, it's bombproof. I don't like the stock of the Ruger on a hard recoiling rifle. They hurt me a lot more than a CZ ever has. Edit, my .416 Rigby 550 holds 4+1

    .375 bullet weight

We're not allowed to use solids for deer here. The bullets have to be expanding. With the larger calibres that generally means downloading to minimise damage, or in some cases I've gone for a really robust bullet designed for thick skinned game. They're expanding bullets, but on such a small...

    .375 bullet weight

It's not the recoil I was worried about, it was the deer! But then a heavy slow bullet will probably be fine. If I was to go light I'd slow that down too - a 200gr bullet at about 2200fps would be similar to a .375 Winchester, and only putting out a couple of thousand foot pounds.

    .375 bullet weight

Hi all, I've just bought myself a Sako 75 in .375H&H. Barrel twist is 1-12. I'm just wondering what bullet weights you've all experienced in the cartridge and how you got on with them? I'm looking to do a light reduced load for deer, maybe using 200gr bullets intended for .375 Winchester, and...

    500 Jeffery Club

I think our best bet is to start with a cheap Mauser copy. Do all the machine work on it, fiddle about. If we master it we can copy the dimensions over to a nice action and call it done. Have you got brass, bullets and dies there?

    500 Jeffery Club

That would be much appreciated. Spike doesn't need it... ;) I've got a Lothar Walther barrel, pre chambered and threaded for a Mauser action. It'll be built on whatever I can find, I have a couple in mind. It's a fun project with my gunsmith. He's never done one before and neither have I - we...

    500 Jeffery Club

I'm hoping to join the .500J club soon myself. Now I've mastered my .416 Rigby and can shoot it quite comfortably, I feel I am ready to move to the next step. The question is, is this the next step? Or am I moving up too fast?

    What Is Your Dream Rifle?

I'd struggle to pick a single favourite, but it would have to be a hand made English bolt action in a cartridge developed by the rifle maker. A .375 by Holland & Holland, a .416 by Rigby, and maybe a smaller bore like a .275 Rigby. A double rifle would be nice, but I don't know what. I'd want...

    Pros/cons of shortening a .416 Rigby?

Hi guys. I've just got back to shooting my CZ550 .416 Rigby after a bit of a break (covid, lack of enthusiasm etc!) and I'm thinking it's a big old lump of a gun for someone of my stature (5'6, 14 stone). I think I need to cut an inch off of the stock and I'd like to take a bit off of the barrel...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

That's an unusual looking gun in this calibre! I like your thinking though. I don't know much about the Savage 110 - is it a modular system which allows you to swap bolts etc, or was there a lot of work involved in what you did? Interesting info re. the scopes you've tried. I'm surprised that...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Lots of good info there, thanks. I think there's a good chance that a hunt is enjoyed even more if the money you pay for it is relevant to you. As much as I'd love to be rich, I don't think it would be good for me. If you're able to go and do whatever you want, whenever you want, surely...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

It is pre threaded. It was tried on a standard length Mauser action and fitted, but we think that the threads on a magnum Mauser will be the same. Had it not been threaded I would probably build on a CZ550 Magnum because I'm quite familiar with them. I heard the hunting gods loud and clear...

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Given the choice I probably would go for a Gibbs. The thing is, my gunsmith stumbled across a pre chambered barrel in .500 Jeff and after a bit of a chat we've decided we could have a play and see what we can do with it. The whole idea kind of evolved from finding the barrel!

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Well that was a bit silly. I can't judge a fellow Whelen user too harshly though - you're not so daft!

    .500 Jeffery action options?

Ah guys! Talk about throwing a spanner in the works! surely if Jeffery had their rifles made on a magnum 98, I should do the same? My gunsmith has a bucket full of standard 98's - he's just potentially found a magnum for a good price though. Why would you choose a standard length over a magnum...
