African Hunter vs African Hunter II?

African Hunter by Mellon is indeed a classic It should be recognized that most of Mellon’s hunting was done in the 60’s and early 70’s and is relevant today only for historical content. When we first started hunting in Ethiopia in the 80’s clients would show up expecting to find an Ethiopia...

    25-06 or 257 Wby?

Shot a few pronghorns with the .25-06. 400 yard shots were certain when I did my part. I think I used 100 Sierra hand loads. If I were doing it over again I’d probably go with 120 gr bullets. Too much meat distribution with the lighter bullets. Keep it simple and go with the legitimized wildcat.

338 Win Mag for plains game

CFE223 came along about 3 years after I quit hunting the mountains. My .35 Whelen load was developed about the turn of this century. The rifle is a 700 Remington Classic. 22” barrel which was handyI in the bush and in a saddle scabbard. I’m rather old fashioned. Except for the old Hornaday .458...

338 Win Mag for plains game

I used a super accurate.35 Whelen the first decade on this century to take 4 moose and 4 elk. Chronographed at 2,525 fps with 57.5 grs of Reloader 15 and Nosler 250!gr Partitions and produced 1/2 “ 3 shot groups. Sighted 3 “ high at 100 yds it was dead on at 200 and 19 low at 300. I stretched it...

338 Win Mag for plains game

There were many safari’s when I only took my .30-06 and 180 Nosler Partition handloads successfully killing most of the African plains game. 3” high at a hunder yards and season at 225. I even used it on Mt Nyala. In a pinch I had some of the old 22O gr Hornaday steel jacketed solids. Good for...

In memoriam - Professional Hunter Greg Michelson killed by Buffalo

Just stumbled onto this. Guess I’ve been out of touch for a while. I hunted leopard with Greg in 2001 in SW Zimbabwe on the Botswana border. Actually shot the leopard (Greg’s 81st) in broad daylight mid day on our way to check one of the baits. It was a good lung hit but we followed him about...

    Elephant caliber

Back in the good old days of hunting elephant in the highland rain forests of Ethiopia, after trial and some near fatal error, we chambered every .458 WM in the company on out to .458 Lott.

220 grain FMJ bullets in .308" - supplier?

The old 220 grain Hornady solid loaded to around 2,300 fps bores into a hippos skull like a drill

    Terry Irwin Professional Hunter

I hunted with him in Natal in 1988 when he and Anne were looking after Zulu Nyala safaris for Trevor Shaw. Southern Nyala was the main object of that safari. They had an order for several warthogs for some big party. Had to be head shots. I got to be the shooter. That was an interesting day. We...

Tepi, When My Last Elephant Safari Was Almost My Last Safari Ethiopia

When the hunting was closed for three years in 1993 the poachers decimated the tiang in the Omo valley. Cattle herds worked on the grass within a few miles of the river too. Do you see any Roan in Sudan.?
