Is there a glossary somewhere of all of the nicknames and local names of the animals of Africa? For example, Simba for lion, etc.?

Side question to all of you No.1 guys: What sorts of groups do you expect a No.1 to reliably produce? I have a No.1 in .30-06, and it's so-so, and really sort of picky. I plan to spend some time this spring reloading to find a "best fit," but so far I'm lucky at about 1.5" groups @ 100 yards.

OP here ... all good information and really helpful. I'm excited to have these conversations with PHs as we discuss our hunt. I suspect we'll have a great time, and, if we leave wanting more adventure, well, that's just reason to return.

Great question that I should have included in the OP ... Which species are most likely to be wary, and difficult to hunt? Which species are the least difficult?

I like this idea, i.e. being the client who can drop into an area that other clients don't see.

Horseback hunting? Hmm ... we've enjoyed such here in the states. Definitely a twist on the usual safari. Sounds intriguing.

Either before or after a hunt, Wife and I were thinking of a 3-day horseback photo safari with this company. Any experience? We’re both experienced riders and owners...

First timer, here … I see there are several places in Johannesburg that cater to hunters for stays pre- and post-hunt. I think we’d sure like that … a chance to “catch up” and fuel up. Give me the ups and downs of some of these. What’s good, what’s unnecessary, etc.

I see you can’t take lever action rifles to South Africa. Too bad, since I have a Winchester 1895 that I’d love to bring. Two questions: What’s the rationale? Are there any countries that do allow them?

I do like the justification of: it’s part of the enjoyment of the trip.
