Which is a more "classic" African cartridge, the 303 British or the 7x57 Mauser/275 Rigby?

The proper answer is a .275 magazine rifle and a .303 double.

Does RSA have a minimum caliber for PG ? These .223 & 6mm test are infuriating

Whew, I thought I was getting a little extreme. Ever since I started communicating with this lot all I want to do is shoot a nice whitetail buck off sticks with a .416 Rigby at 30 yards.

    Burden to inform?

If I was booked on a hunt with them I would want to know. While it’s fresh on everyone’s minds is a time to share knowledge and experience, regardless of fault, if there was any. Also, complacency is in many aspects of life, oftentimes a refresher of the task at hand is well being for everyone...

    What are you reading?

I’m sitting in my library as I am reading this thread. I am fortunate that as my kids grew up in our last house they always saw me reading books from our modest wall length bookshelf. Six years ago we built our new house and we built out a bedroom into my full library. My favorite room in the...

    S&W identification

I love the Victory models. Lots of them were reamed out to take 38 special after the war. It’s also known as a 38/200 British Service Revolver. They had 5” barrels and most of the Victory’s for our guys had 4” barrels and were chambered for 38 special. Look carefully on the left side on the top...

    S&W identification

It’s a M&P Model of 1905 3rd change, made between 1909-1915 with that serial. If the hammer and trigger are nickel, then it has been refinished since those parts are case hardened from the factory. It’s hard to tell sometimes from photos. The important part is treating her right with six rounds...

    S&W identification

You are describing a Victory model, and with a 5” barrel could be a British lend-lease gun if indeed from the 1940s. If the serial number starts with a V, then it was also originally chambered in 38 S&W, not 38 Special.

    S&W identification

That is a 38 hand ejector Military and Police Model of 1905. Hard to tell, but looks nickel in the pic, and has been refinished. Stocks are original era. I could tell you approximate ship date if you want to post the serial number.

458 Win Mag for deer and bear

I like IMR 4198 in my cast bullet rifle loads. I would use that or a reduced load of H4895. Hodgdon lists reduced loads for that powder.

    We bought some land

Congratulations! There’s nothing like being able to shoot and hunt your own land. The deer on my property are so used to me I can be shooting on my range, then trek up to the house and see a dozen deer in my front pasture.
