Haven’t been on the forum for a few days and am shocked to hear of Bruce’s passing.
RIP Bruce - your commentary, wit and love for Partitions will be missed!
Don’t know about first world countries but here in SA it’s very difficult to find factory ammo that is consistently in stock and doesn’t cost an absolute arm and a leg. For me reloading is a no-brainer - and it beats sitting in front of the TV watching crap with my wife...
M70 for me too.
As mentioned:
- upgraded wood option - oil finished
- blued barrel rather than matte
- red pad
- slightly narrower barrel contour on the .375 (similar to on the Alaska model)
Nice rifle and review - thanks.
2,995 FPS with a 165gr bullet is very impressive. I’m running 2950 with 165gr Sierra Gamechangers from a 25” barrel and thought that was high...
What powder / load are you using?
The better BC of the 250 would be preferable to the slightly higher muzzle velocity of the 235, and should maintain 2000fps past 300 yards for decent expansion. I’m going to try the 250gr Peregrine VLR4 in the Karoo this year on plainsgame ( Gemsbok, Black Wildebeest etc).
Not a silly question at all.
Yes, the 30-06 is plenty for Zebra - took two last year with 165gr Sierra Tipped Gamekings. Both ran about 20m and fell over. One a pass through and the other found under the skin on the off-side. Shot through the chevron.
Yes, should fit well. The 280ai is a cartridge that’s really intriguing - almost Rem Mag performance with much less powder and wallop at the blunt end!
I own a Tikka T3 Laminated Stainless in .243 which is an attractive looking and very accurate rifle. Tikka’s tend to be pretty light though so I think they’re best suited to smaller calibre / lower recoiling rifles - I’ve heard many complaints about Tikkas recoiling fiercely in magnums! Also...
Hi. I use them in my 30-06 at2925 fps (25”) barrel. It’s a very accurate tough bullet. This Gemsbok was taken at 308m (impact velocity approximately 2250fps). Slightly quartering to and the entrance was just in front of the right shoulder. Bullet was recovered under the skin on of the off-side...
I have 2 - both the 4-16x44 model, with the ZBr ballistic reticle and exposed windage turret. For the money I don’t think they can be beaten - accurate and repeatable dialling (if that’s your thing) and crisp, clear glass. I don’t hunt much at dusk or dawn though so can’t comment on low light...
