I've taken 3 in Mozambique in 2024 and found it to be (unexpected) great fun to hunt them!
I plan to hunt 4 more of them in Moz & SA next month & I can't wait!
Thus far I've taken all with the 416 Rigby & Barnes solids making no mess at all to the hides.
I own this rifle in 30-06 too. Taken countess deer with it in Penns Woods over the last 40 years.
Someone needs to snatch it up!
It simply balances and points perfectly!
GLWS
My 340 Weatherby.
Call it a Death Ray, Hammer of Thor or Finger of God.
It simply gets the job done near or far, big or small.
Like the 338 Win Mag. It just works with no fuss!
Although the Rigby bolt actions are build on a Mauser barreled action I do agree that Mauser does a superior job on their own stocks.
However if we're going to throw everyone in the ring of a discussion there is a Westley Richards on the top of the pile if you have enough $$$$.
For me, there are not any rifles in the price range of a Dakota/Parkwest that can compare to them in craftsmanship and quality. I own several and think they are very well crafted at a fair price point that exceeds Rigby & Heym.
To your point on the permit service. I'm told it just takes one guy screening your rifles to decide to hold them hostage for payment.
My PH tells me to always use the service to insure a smooth transition in South Africa. Too many people on the take there.
At the end of the day, to each...
It's all fun and games until someone tells you that it's not.
I'd box them all to take the risk and stress out of your travels.
Maybe you're carrying more ammo than you will need?
Go slow and take it all in.
No matter how much time you're allowing for your safari, it's not enough!
Leave your phone in airplane mode the entire safari. Just use it for pictures.
