New Member from VA, headed to SA

What part of VA? It’s a great website here with lots of info. Taking a gun is pretty easy, I have done it on all 3 trips over. Multiple guns actually except for the last trip. Forms are fairly easy. Flights are pretty easy. I flew direct from Newark on United first two trips, but...

    Ruger No 1 Scope options

The Ruger rings you are looking for can be found on amazon. This was the cheapest place I could find them. Mod $30’s shipped free. You may have to order two depending on scope. I am mounting a leupold 2.5-8 and to get eye relief I wanted I needed two rings. The leupold 2.5-8 has a very...

    9.3x62 bolt rifle barrel length...

I carried my Ruger Alaskan 9.3 several times on deer drives after my lovely wife gave it to me for Christmas. I absolutely loved the short barrel while on those long walks! Walking through laurels and thick cover, etc. handles wonderfully. I have not shot it thru a chronograph yet, but it...

    Caliber and plains game

I completely understand! Piss poor wording in my part. Shouldn’t have said perfect shot, should have said a good shot. It hit both lungs but very bottom part. A bigger hole would have helped tremendously. And a few inches higher or forward in direct heart would be better (perfect). I just...

    Caliber and plains game

Here is a pic of the holes. Rear one is the rifle, one closer to shoulder is pistol. Entrance side with both. Pistol shot centered heart. Wasn’t necessary, but quicker is better

    Caliber and plains game

Yeah, I am pretty dang sure where he hit it. Yes I went to skinning shed I always do. He it hit right behind front leg where knuckle/elbow joint is. Bullet hit right above to the rear end of heart. A few inches lower and I’m sure it would have been seconds. Biggest problem was bullet didn’t...

    Caliber and plains game

I took a 6.5 creedmoor last time we went to Africa for my youngest son and to shoot little stuff with. My youngest shot a nice gemsbuck. He hit it perfectly and got a pass through even. 140accubond, max loads. Very little blood, and after a bit, tracker finally found it, still alive but...

To Suppress or Not to Suppress? That is the question!

I say suppress and shorten. The velocity per inch you will loose is just about meaningless. I cut my 300wsm to 18”. Still getting 2800-2900fps with 180’s, and I am below max on load. 18” 308 win my son hunts with 150’s, nothing he has shot at out to 250 yards has managed to live long...

Suppressors prohibited for temporary import into South Africa?

The place we looked at suppressors had about every thread you could possibly want. They had several in 1/2” and a few in 5/8”. They had one I really wanted that was a cool design. Part extended back over barrel instead of extended from end out. Kept gun shorter. They also had several...

Suppressors prohibited for temporary import into South Africa?

Put them on your us customs form along with rifle, that’s all the people I know did. They had their paperwork/stamp with them as well

Suppressors prohibited for temporary import into South Africa?

And for what it’s worth, they are very cheap to buy there. It’s over the counter, pretty much any gun shop probably has them. They were around $200 and up where we looked in Elliras, Limpopo area

Suppressors prohibited for temporary import into South Africa?

Ask your PH, they may have one there to use. Ours picked one up for us while there for us to use. I have not heard they were banned in South Africa before. I know a couple of people who have taken them, leaving thru Atlanta and had no issues at all.

    9.3x62 ammo choice

I have taken a 9.3x62 to Africa twice. First trip 286 Aframes. Took Eland, waterbuck, blue wildebeest, nyala. Eland was over 200yards or so away (recovered several bullets) shortest shot was Nyala less than 100yards. I also used 232 Norma oryx loaded lighter for my son to use it as well...
