    Sunglasses for hunting

I’m 76, have always been sensitive to bright sun, have had cataract surgery, and of course am presbyopic. I was a high dollar sunglass wonk for decades but in today’s market they are money down the toilet IMO. I have been buying the Tifosis on Amazon for a few years now. Sub $100 gets you...

    The mighty 243 Win

I own three ‘06s and a 300 WSM. The ‘06s are all on the heavy side, Mod 70, Bergara B-14 and sporter 1917. 1917 is iron sights only, too damned heavy by itself to add the weight of a scope to it and the other two are 8 1/2lbs scoped. My 300 WSM is a Browning X-Bolt Speed, 7 1/2 lbs scoped and 8...

    The mighty 243 Win

There was that one time hunting the Deep Creek mtns and I was right on the edge of the Goshute Rez. I hit a nice Mulie buck at ~400 yards with my 25-06 and 120 grain bullet (I don’t remember, probably Rem CorLokt) and it kept that buck from dropping off the side of the range onto the Rez. Never...

    The mighty 243 Win

It was a poor attempt at humor given Bob Nelson’s strong aversion to the “puny” 243. If you’re aware of who Tim Sundles is, he has been around the block a time or two and I value his opinion, but of course we all have our preferences when it comes to to rifle cartridges. I’m a dues paying...

    The mighty 243 Win

I couldn’t help myself, had to post this one for Bob Nelson/35 Whelen

    35 Whelen

Another instance of me spouting off I saw that huge chunk of wood on the side of the stock and said to myself that’s a Krag.

    .35 Whelen & CFE223 - magnum or standard primer?

Amazing that in 2025 internal ballistics is still firmly rooted in the dark arts. One of the reasons I keep a vial of rooster blood on the reloading bench shelf.

    .35 Whelen & CFE223 - magnum or standard primer?

I learned long ago that the 225 and 250 Partitions in the Whelen produce higher pressures than the 225 Gamekings and the 250 Speer Hot Cors. My loads for Partitions are two grains less in both instances using RE-15 and LR primers.

    35 Whelen

The rifle in bottom pic of Osa Johnson is a sporterized ‘98 Krag, not a Springfield.

Can you show us that quote in the proposed legislation?

Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

42 pages later, LOL! Here goes: 308 Win for its overwhelming ubiquitousness. Is there any other cartridge that compares to the number of sporting, military, and precision platforms the 308 Win has been built in? Ever? 243 Win. Easy shooting and mountain climbing in lightweight rifles deadly on...

Happy Father's Day......A Story Of "Old Ephraim" & One Sweet Rifle!!!

And thank you for posting it. I was a bit amazed to see it on AH. I’ll never hunt Africa but the forum is about the best hunting type forum on the web. Ephraims grave via BF is a great way up, just a bit further. Another story: May of ‘75 I’m alone in my ‘62 Chev step side 2 wheel drive coming...

Happy Father's Day......A Story Of "Old Ephraim" & One Sweet Rifle!!!

Nephi Bott was county commissioner and erecting the memorial for Old Ephraim was his baby. As was the memorial for the plane that went down up in Beaver Creek in ‘52 carrying soldiers home from the Korean War. Ephraim’s memorial is not up Blacksmith Fork, it’s at the head of Long Hollow and can...
