    358 Norma

I've read that the 35 Whelen is the most efficient cartridge. I wonder if what ever drives that also drives the velocities that can be wrung out of it ?

    The .358 Norma

Way back, shrouded in the mists of the past, there was no 300 Win Mag, and a brand new and more or less unknown .338 Win Mag. Norma then released the .308 Norma and the .358 Norma to fill an unoccupied niche. These two cartridges showed good ballistic performance and took up a good deal of my...

    The .358 Norma

I found .358 Norma 250s on Ammo Search with no problem a couple years back....

    340 Weatherby Mag

but, it sneaks in that if a .338 bullet is good, a .358 bullet is better.....apologies in advance...

    340 Weatherby Mag

The 340 was once the preference of polar bear hunters, where long range, bad temper, and large, tough animals are the rule. But polar bear hunting has mostly gone by the wayside. Self-defense = close range, and many lesser or greater cartridges will do. I think mounties are issued a .30-06...

    358 Norma

I have a Weatherby Mark V in 358 Norma, a Safari Custom from the old days. Good cartridge, I wanted one ever since Norma brought it out. I like the 35s.

    358 Norma

Bob summarizes the beauty of the 35 Whelen very well. Having it, what more do you need?

    358 Norma

Note that Speer lists the 250 gr HotCor at 2700fps for the .35 Whelen, within 50 fps of the .358 Norma. Modern powder technology, great efficiency of the .35 Whelen case.

    35 Whelen

As a young man, I had access to miles of sagebrush hills and canyons, affording shots as close as you want and as far as you want. I had a Mod 94 .30-30, vintage 1950 that his Uncle gave to my Father. After a while, rocks and the occasional galvanized bucket had no chance. It was great...

    Help with a Dakota Rifle

I've a Dakota 97 in 300 Dakota, H0371, sold by Don and Norma Allen. From the first owner I have some reload information for this rifle, have yet to test it out. The rifle is remarkable for its slick bolt. It's full CRF and 3 pos safety. I like it very much, even next to my 76's.

Rigby / Holland & Holland / Westley Richards

Max kudos to Reto Buehler. He made a beautiful 375 Wby for me on a GMA action, beautiful exhibition grade stock. Accurate. Perfect. I don't think you can find a finer rifle.

    Rifle wait time woes

April 2025 - just enquired of Reto Beuhler what is his wait time. He said ~ 2 years. Including GMA action production. It took about that for my last Beuhler rifle as well. One of these very fine rifles is a big deal!

    A Nasty Cape Buffalo Charge!

My Father taught me to palm the bolt back in the fifties. Works very well as you bring the rifle up, less well if the rifle is already shouldered. But it still works at the shoulder. I'm not sure, but I think palming the bolt helps to ensure that the bolt is fully retracted before being pushed...

    A Nasty Cape Buffalo Charge!

Well done! Courage under attack, though he had no choice! Reminds me of a story told by my Grandmother's cousin, who with his workmate encountered a hostile black bear while logging in SE Washington State. The workmate was in front, with a .30-30 Mod 94 and stepped back while chambering a...
