    13yo…Book Recommendations?

My daughter loved Eva Shockey's Taking Aim. At that age, my son absolutely devoured anything by Peter Hathaway Capstick, but Last Horizons was a series of shorter stories that held my reluctant readers attention

Chainsaws and those who use them

My grandfather was always a Stihl man, and for no other reason, that's what I bought. For my large saw I run a ms661 with a 25 inch bar because there is no kill like overkill. I have an echo cs-271t that I use for limbing and whatnot. That said, I've become disabled from arthritis and don't...

    Cartridges you just hate

I will say that, while I hate my 338, and I have mostly classic cartridges invented generations before I was thought about, I actually really like the 6.5 creedmoor on its capabilities. I have taught all of my kids to shoot on it, and it has accounted for more deer in our house than all other...

    Cartridges you just hate

Frankly, I hate my 338 win mag. It may just be the rifle (BAR safari mark ii) or the fit, but I"d much rather spend the day shooting my 375 h&h or my 416 or even 450 rigby. The 338 just hits wrong, it's uncomfortable, and if I run the muzzle break, obnoxious.

Who is shooting their Ruger Hawkeye African .280 Ackley?

I have the same with firearms I bought a new model 70 super grade where the threaded holes for the scope bases were so far out of square that a leupold scope didn't have enough windage to get on paper. Winchester just replaced that gun. Another model 70 safari in 375 h&h came with one hole...

    Wood stock rifles

There are Aesthetics and there is practicality, it doesn't bother me but suppressors make a huge difference for my kids and their enjoyment of hunting. As is the general theme my preference remains for blued and wood but I thread the barrels on most rifles I have as it helps my kids get into...

    Wood stock rifles

My other problem is that I find it very difficult to alter synthetic stocks to fit me. For shotguns I require a 15 and 7/8 length of pull. I can get by with shorter on a rifle but really need to be able to add a spacer and a butt pad. That's hard on most synthetic guns

    Wood stock rifles

I agree with the assessment of the aesthetic however there is no better way to introduce a young particularly noise-sensitive girl to the sport. She could not hunt without a suppressor and I support her in that.

    Wood stock rifles

The same reason modern US cars have ridiculously high warranty return rates. I think Cory Doctorow refers to it as "enshitification". Our world is becoming more disposable, at enormous economic and environmental cost. Consumerism has driven costs down but in exchange, we get the junk we as a...

A Case of Use Enough Gun?

Anatomically I've never understood the concept of the No Man's land, I'm a surgeon so always think in terms of human anatomy but there's no way you could go between the lungs and the spine in a human. The largest blood vessels in the body are right in front of the spine through most of the lung...

Model 70 .375 Safari Express Shooting Low

Are your scope rings matched correctly? Is it possible they aren't correct from the factory? I've seen 20 moa rings that would solve the problem without redneck engineering, though shims would work too. I had a model 70 supergrade once that was off paper to the left from the factory with a...

    AR-10 Caliber Question

I've enjoyed playing with a 375 raptor. 308 necked up to 375. Solid ballistics, plenty of bullets to choose from and ready to make brass from 308. 270 grain bullet at 2300fps. 400 grain subsonic. Fun toy and there is even a company that sells loaded ammo (tnt munitions). Suppressed subs are fun...

6.5 Grendel, an after action report

My daughter's first deer was taken at 50 yards with the grendel. It was facing straight towards us and she shot it in the chest with a 124 grain hammer hunter at 2500 fps. It penetrated the entire length of the deer and came out the ham. Ran about 20 yards and piled up with lung blood...

    Anyone else butcher?

My wife is not a fan because of the mess in the basement kitchen, but we process all our animals. Last weekend we processed 3 deer and a hog. Now my son is 15 so I can pass off some work to him. I've never had great luck getting exactly what i want from the local processors. One year they...
