Your rifle has a mysterious side to it. The action is quite clearly an FN commercial large ring action that was made up until 1953 on their 640 model. However your serial number indicates it was made in 1957 which would have been the Husqvarna 1640 model. Maybe the factory found some old unused...
If you post the serial number, you can x-out the last three digits if you’d like, and some pics of both sides of the action we can figure out the model and year of manufacture.
Could it be the way you are holding the rifle? When I shoot off the bench I hold the rifle firmly like I’m shooting freehand. I’ve only shot off sticks once but the rifle was held same as from the bench. It was a few years ago so I don’t remember if the point of impact changed.
The Voere was from Intersurplus and the Mauser stock was at a local gun shop, Reliable Gun. I’ve never come across any suitable stocks from either of them since. I think I got lucky.
The first restocking I did was with a stock off a Voere that had a Mauser action. It just needed a little tweaking in the barrel groove as well as glass bedding. The second one was a Mauser stock that again required only a bit of work to the barrel channel and glass bedding. I also restocked one...
I currently own two 640’s, one in 8x57 and the other in 9.3x62. They are great rifles if they were taken care of. I’ve gone through a few of them till I found these two which appear to be low round count rifles and great shape inside and out. The only drawback to the original stocks is that they...
I always was intrigued with the no.1, and I finally got one, two actually. One was in .458 win mag. Recoil was brutal so I sent it on down the road. The other was in 270 wby with a custom stock with beautiful grain. It was with this rifle that I learned about vertical stringing that these rifles...
It is a bit of a kicker alright. My double in 450/400 weighed 10.7 pounds, and I would want it any lighter. I imagine the Ruger No.1 would be a handful in this calibre. I wouldn’t want a higher muzzle velocity either.
I have shot the 286 gr. Swift A-Frame at a muzzle velocity of 2418 fps. I also shoot the Nosler ET monolithic at a muzzle velocity of 2584 fps. Both show good accuracy on targets. The 286 gr. bullet has a 7 foot pound advantage at the muzzle, but after that the 250 grain out performs it in every...
I say any modification that improves the gun for your use is ok in my books. I have a couple of Husqvarna that I’ve replaced the triggers on and refinished the stocks. I don’t sand the stocks, I just strip off the old finish, raise any dents with a steam iron and apply an oil finish. Any battle...
