I had a Winchester model 1886 deluxe in 45-90. I’ve read about people using this rifle and cartridge to shoot elephants successfully. With that in mind, an elephant gun can have a very heavy recoil, and my experience with warm loads confirms that this rifle/cartridge combo will kick. Something...
I’ve been dealing with Husqvarna rifles for a few years now. They have a noticeable drop on the comb at the butt end. Ok for iron sights but you have to crane your head up to use a scope and I find that makes the recoil feel a lot worse. Straight combs are much better if you’re using a scope. I...
I had a weatherby Vanguard in .375. Muzzle heavy and kicked pretty good. It had the hollow synthetic stock, so I removed the recoil pad and added 15.5 ounces of lead held in place with silicone caulking. It was much nicer to shot and balanced perfectly after the modification. I’m not a fan of...
Winchester model 70 would be my first choice followed very closely by the Browning x-bolt. I don’t know enough about the current Rugers to make a call.
I have to agree with the 270 shooters. It’s a great round and plenty powerful enough for elk without kicking the daylights out of you. Mine is a Winchester feather weight in stainless with a walnut stock. The only thing I don’t like is the 22” barrel. I’d prefer a 24” one.
I didn’t get into reloading till I was in my 60’s. Bought used equipment from a guy who was getting out of it. I don’t really know if I’m saving money by reloading, but that’s not why I do it. It’s all about accuracy, and this brings a whole new dimension to shooting. I enjoy working up loads as...
Your rifle has a mysterious side to it. The action is quite clearly an FN commercial large ring action that was made up until 1953 on their 640 model. However your serial number indicates it was made in 1957 which would have been the Husqvarna 1640 model. Maybe the factory found some old unused...
If you post the serial number, you can x-out the last three digits if you’d like, and some pics of both sides of the action we can figure out the model and year of manufacture.
Could it be the way you are holding the rifle? When I shoot off the bench I hold the rifle firmly like I’m shooting freehand. I’ve only shot off sticks once but the rifle was held same as from the bench. It was a few years ago so I don’t remember if the point of impact changed.
