If memory serves, I believe the 1917 magazine box was shortened for the Model 30 to hold one less round (5 instead of 6), but I could be mistaken. My 1927 Model 30S holds five 30-06 rounds And of course, the 30 being offered in multiple calibers was a difference as well.
