Need help picking a nice Safari rifle. Sako 85? Sako 90? Something else?

I think we all agree that the 30.06 with 180 grain ammo is a great safari package for PG. However, I recommend you look at other calibers as well. Seems some of the the larger PG are still running strong for 100-200 plus yards after good shots out of a 30.06 with a 180 grain bullet, but that...

Most efficient 3 cartridge spread for dangerous game?

I don't want to convince anybody. Just saying out of own experience that the 338 WM is a great cartridge to have in any rifle battery for larger PG and some DG (cats and bears) when moving around in DG territory.

Most efficient 3 cartridge spread for dangerous game?

I agree, Sarg. The 338 WM can not be left out of the conversation. Kills as good as 375 H&H and 9.362, but can add some range too. Although legislation blocks it for DG in some countries, it is excellent on larger PG, and where allowed on DG the performance is great according to everybody who...

Recommended dangerous game bullets and cartridges?

You have it wrong…and it confuse others…The old Hornady DG SP RN bullets were not interbonds but just interlocks. The interbonds were a different bullet…quite good but expensive to make for the smaller calibers…so Hornady started to fase it out and went in big time with the ELD-X’s snd CX’s…The...

Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

Well amschind, if I don't shoot beyond 400 yards and the ballistics of the 7mm-08 are better than the 6.5 CM to 500 yards, why would I prefer a CM then, especially if I can shoot a heavier bullet. I only shoot premium bullets 150-160 grains with Staball 6.5...giving me 2900 ft/sec with the 150...

Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

Hello @Neophyte Everything you say make sense to me. Although I like some of the older classics too, such as the 6.5x55 SE, 280 Rem, 30.06, 35 Whelen, 375 WH&H, I decided on the 7mm-08 Rem instead of the 6.5 CM due to same ballistics to 500 yards, but a larger diameter (I never shoot beyond 400...

Best bullets for 7mm-08 hunting African plains game?

Yeh, many different bullets for various situations. I looked, the 169 Hammer bullet you mentioned needs a 1:8 twist and will be probably too long for a 7mm-08's magazine. Then there is a Barnes 168 grain LRX which will be too long too. I think the only 168 grainer that will fit in a 7mm-08...

Best bullets for 7mm-08 hunting African plains game?

Which 168 grainer do you mean? The Nosler ABLR or the Berger VLD or the Berger Classic Hunter? I am just concern that it will be a little on the soft side for short range and may be a lack of penetration, or does Hammer or Barnes bullets have a 168 grainer? .

Best bullets for 7mm-08 hunting African plains game?

A hammer indeed! Your 140 grain AH load is great for western US, but in the wooded areas in NA and bushveld areas in South Africa I prefer a heavier bullet, such as the 156 grain Norma Oryx, 160 grain NP and SAF, as well as Woodleigh's and SAF's 175 grainers. New gun powders make the 7mm-08 a...
