I’m going to try to keep it a little slower black bears ain’t that tough and about 150 yard is my personal max for irons. That’s one of my only complaints about this rifle is the sights it’s a ruger m77 tang safety why it has a 10/22 style rear sight and a small post is beyond me. I have thought...
Well tomorrow is the day I see if my shoulder(torn about 3 years ago) can handle it. these loads shouldn’t be too bad around the same recoil as old school 1 1/4oz 12ga slug loads.
Black powder lube generally is a mix of lard/tallow and beeswax. Depending on what time of year you are shooting ect you can make the lube softer or harder. 50/50 unsalted lard/tallow and beeswax is good for most cartridge applications.
Idk seems pretty versatile lighter/thinner jacketed stuff or even hard cast for North America/Europe heavier jacketed softs and solids for Africa. Everything from whitetail to elephant. The tri ball load I wanna play with could even be a close range coyote killer.
With the hornady 350gr 69gr of 2015 is close to the base of the bullet with the bullet seated to the crimp groove. Since I am using standard rifle primers I was told to stay away from ball powder and compressed loads.
Eventually I’m going to get a mold for this as well. 485gr or so in lead and I’m going to get a steel/iron mold that way I can try zinc. Zinc bullet the same length as the 485gr would be around 300gr.
Interesting read for sure. I do find it funny that most people think anything but a cup and core would be needed for black bear a .30-30 would definitely do the job out to 150 yards. Only reason I’m going with the .458 is my .303 has a couple issues and I haven’t set up to load for the snider...
Every once in a while we will get OEM grade versions of some powders. All I have on hand is IMR4064 and the accurate 2015 currently. Always on the look out for 4198 and 4895 but it’s thin on the ground. I found some large rifle primers finally after 2 years of looking.
