338 Win Mag for plains game

I don't care how you load it, the 35 Whelen is about a 250 yard cartridge. Out to that distance, it definitely has a decisive edge in terminal performance over the 33's. But, the fat, stubby 35 caliber bullets start to fall out of the air past 250 yards. From there, even the modest 338-06...

    375hh 250-270g bullet load

Loaded to similar velocity, the 300 grain Sierra Game King has a trajectory nearly identical to the traditional match .308 Win 175 Sierra Match King. I have had my best results with RL-17, but that powder is pretty difficult to obtain these days. There are quite a few optics available with...

Boyd’s Stock for M70, go or no go?

There are some good reasons to consider Boyd's stocks. Upgrading to pretty walnut is not one of them. Accurate Innovations may be worth a look: https://www.aigunstocks.com/ Otherwise, you may be best served by working with a good gunsmith to select and fit good walnut to your rifle.

    Ruger No 1 Scope options

I didn't feel the need to make any changes to my Ruger #1A. Mounted a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36. It has sufficient eye relief and is light and compact enough to not disrupt the shotgun-like balance and handling of the Ruger #1. Though the 3-9x36 is no longer manufactured, the 3-10x42 Z3 would still...

    Ruger No 1 Scope options

Here is a mounting solution that can help you solve the eye relief problem: https://eabco.com/ruger-number-one-scope-mount-slip-over-weaver-style/?searchid=1199250&search_query=ruger+%231

    375 Ruger

I have two Ruger 77 MKII's. Neither of them are in DG chamberings. I am fond of the Ruger action and the trim stock lines. As for the 375 Ruger, it is an excellent cartridge. In many ways, it is superior to the H&H. I have experience with both, so I am not speculating. A friend of mine has...

Which 7mm cartridge is the "best" poll?

7x57 is, by far, my favorite of the 7mm's. I have a Ruger #1A in 7x57. It is a joy to carry and shoot and it is the first rifle I reach for if I am hunting deer sized game, or smaller, out to 400 yards. I would not hesitate to carry it in pursuit of elk class animals, but I would limit myself...

    Reloader 16 ???

RL16 will work well in any application where H4350 works. RL16 is superior to H4350 in every way, except price and availability. If RL16 is available to you in bulk, I advise that you buy all of it you can afford.

Does anyone know the H2O capacity of S&B 7x57 brass?

Why are you not measuring the water capacity of your own S&B brass?

What new Ruger would you like to see in a limited special run?

I would buy a Ruger Hawkeye African in 338-06, 338-06 AI, or 7 PRC. I would also buy a Ruger Hawkeye Predator in 22 Creedmoor. Though I would not personally be in the market for one of these (because of the 6.5's I already own), I would bet that a FAST TWIST .257 Roberts or .257 Roberts AI...

Opinions on the Interarms mark x 458wm

Parkwest Arms is the new name for Dakota Arms. I have one of their 3 position safeties installed on my Mark X. It is of very good quality. https://parkwestarms.com/product-category/mauser98safety/

Opinions on the Interarms mark x 458wm

I am a fan of the Interarms Mark X. They are very good actions and offer a great deal of value for the money. IMO, $950 is a little on the high side, but not unreasonable. You will be getting a solid rifle for your money.

375h&h guidance - bullets, dies, and brass

I am just beginning to work with TS 15.5, but not in 375 H&H. I am finding that it is not as slow burning as I had expected. In .308 Win, powder charges are staying within one full grain of VARGET and picking up about 40 to 50 fps in muzzle velocity. TS 15.5 will sit between VARGET and H4350...

    Scope Reliability

I liked the old Meopta Artemis scope line a lot. They were very rugged optics. I have a 1.5-6x42. It has a 30mm STEEL tube, so it is on the heavy side. It is built like a tank and has excellent glass in it. To this day, I have yet to see its equal in low light conditions. My only criticism...

Why a .338 WM in Africa?

There is so much overlap between the 338 Win Mag and the 375 H&H, I would see those two rifles as a 338 Win Mag OR 375 H&H proposition, rather than a pair. It would not make sense to me to carry both rifles to Africa. Either one would be a suitable choice for a one rifle, plains game only...
