Thoughts on "entry level" .375 H&H

I have a Mauser 98 and Interarms Mark X in 375. Both were cheap (under $800 and $500 respectively). Both cycle perfectly and they are some of my most accurate rifles. Taken a lot of elk with the Mauser.

A question for lever gun users....

I have a Japchester 1886 in 45-90. Love it. 405 grain bullet knocking on 2400 fps will get your attention. Best elk rifle I have ever seen. Also have a Japchester 1895 in 30-06. Fun rifle. I bought some cheap 45-70 ammo (for the brass) to use for plinking ammo in my 45-90. Had a couple of mis...

What rifle do you totally trust on dangerous game and what rifle do you mistrust on Dangerous game

Why? I have a Savage 116 SE in 375 just because it was cheap. But its CRF and goes bang every time. And in typical cheap Savage fashion, it shoots bug holes at 100 yards with several different loads. Do they have a weakness or flaw that I need to be aware of?

    .460 Weatherby barrel length

I agree that the 460 is a well balanced cartridge. But loading it to full pressure with a 300 grain bullet results in a lot of wasted powder and premature barrel wear. Like loading a 30-06 with 100 grain bullets. It looks to me like 600 grain bullets are where there 460 starts to become an...

Looks to me like the 460 is overbore until you get to 600+ grain bullets...

    Ammoseek for non-handloaders

I sometimes find myself shooting so that I can reload. I shoot a lot and thoroughly enjoy it, but sometimes I like reloading even more. It's a win win for me.

    Need a good gunsmith for a 1917

Correct. One cartridge in the box feeds perfectly. Will stretch out my COAL on a couple heavy bullet rounds and see what happens. Never had a problem with 220 gr RNSP bullets. 150 gr spire point are the biggest culprit. What you are saying makes sense. I suspect that is the problem.

    Separate Training Rifle a NECESSITY?

Not sure how long a trip is but if 1k rounds from a 220 Swift can completely destroy the throat that is easily doable in a few days. I keep my 22-250s under 3500 fps in hopes of getting 2k rounds out of them.

    Need a good gunsmith for a 1917

Bolt always grabs the next cartridge no problem. Just that sometimes it tries to bind up with the next one down.

    Need a good gunsmith for a 1917

4 in the box 1 in the chamber on both. On the 300, the cartridges get slid forward from recoil. The bolt picks one up every time, but the next in line tends to bind the bolt for some reason. SP and RN seated to the same length. Plenty of room in the mag for another .02" coal if desired.

    Separate Training Rifle a NECESSITY?

It is my opinion that a flinch is 100% phycological. If you know you can handle shoulder fired artillery, a lowly peashooter like a 458 Lott is just like shooting a 22.

    Ammoseek for non-handloaders

Ammoseek is great. My brother recently bought several lots of handgun ammo for much cheaper off GunBroker though. I didn't even realize that there was ammo on GB.

If I need more than my 30-06, I pick up my 375.

    Separate Training Rifle a NECESSITY?

Savage 22-250s are my go to. Cheap. Easy to rebarrel. Have a lot of ground squirrel problems. I would dare say that no one knows their rifle better than a varmint hunter. 300 yard headshot on an elk with the 22-250? Why not? Much bigger target than a ground squirrel... But for the big...
