One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

What would you choose? 9.3 doesn't count either.

A 416? 404? 458? Something bigger?

What and why?
416 and 404 Jeffery.
Reasoning I already, they have all done good for me they pack a punch without totally beating the guy up on the other end.

.416 Rigby

Come on guys, we had to pick "one"...

Without advantage of audit looks like the 416, 458 calibers are in majority.
Yup, they seem to get "the next best thing" or atleast the next most popular choices.

I went into this thinking I'd choose the 416 Rigby but have been giving my 458 WinMag a second thought as it seems to be the more versatile of the two given factory loaded options (300-500grain).

My Whitworth .458 WM, because it fits well. 400 Woodleigh SP, and 500 grain as needed.
I am a student of the big bore rifle, with no Africa Game Fields experience.
That will change soon. Cape Buffalo is my quest.

Working from some sage advice from @RayAtkinson, I realized the .458 Win Mag, loaded with good 400 grain Woodleigh bullets, as original .404 Jeffery will get it done. Medium charge of Varget. And I can shoot it.

I have tried Ruger RSM's in .375, .416 Rigby, 458 Lott, Winchester 70's in .375, .416 Remington,
458 Win mag, and CZ 550s in .416 Rigby, and .500 Jeffery. I sold them all.

The Whitworth .458 Win Mag is the rifle I can shoot well. It just fits me, plus I have a matching custom 1912 Steyr Mauser 98, .35 Whelen, with a Whitworth stock. These just fit me without a custom stock upgrade.

That is what I have settled on for the choice of "which one."

So what happens if we allow the .458 WinMag the same higher pressure and almost as long a COL as the .458 Lott is allowed ?

The Woodleigh data would allow the .458 Lott to be 3.465" COL with the 400-gr PPSN crimped in the middle of the cannelure with 2.800" brass.

If we allow the .458 WM+ load a COL of 3.425" by adding an extra cannelure,
we can load the same charge of H4895 as was a compressed charge in the .458 Lott,
using a drop tube for the .458 WM+ of course.
Even if the .458 Lott was in a 24" barrel and my .458 WM+ had a 25" barrel,
the .458 WinMag can have an MV subtraction for 1" extra barrel and it still wins.

And there is a better bullet than the Woodleigh 400-gr PPSN.
It is the Hammer Bullets 404-gr Shock Hammer.
Many of us .458 WinMag aficionados routinely load that bullet to +2500 fps at 3.380" COL in 22" to 24" barrel lengths.
That is with a non-compressed load of AA-2230.
That is a .458 WM+ load that works in any SAAMI .458 Winchester magazine repeater I know of.
One shot kills on cape buffalo bulls and bull giraffe thus far documented.

I would go with my Ruger Number One in 450/400 or my M70 in 416 Remington.

Both work on anything.

404J or 416 Rem in a magazine rifle. Blaser R8 comes in both I think . Doubles don’t appeal to me, but if pressed I’d take a 450/400.

The only reason I chose the .458 WM over the .458 Lott, is that my M77 Mark II Stainless Carbine is just such a nice carry rifle over the RSM the Lott is in. If I didn't have that option, it would be the Lott over a plethora of .375's.

.404 Jeffery, but prefer my .375 Whitworth, fits me perfect too

For the duffers who prefer a heavier bullet loaded longer than the .458 Lott can handle,
try this in your .458 WinMag:

Subsonic loads with same bullet?

I re-throated a .458 B&M with a SAAMI .458 WinMag reamer.
Now I have two cartridges that can beat a .458 Lott with shorter brass.
Make that three, also the .45-70 Elko Magnum beats a .458 Lott.
Higher velocity or lower pressure or both with fine tuning of handloads.
The non-handloaders will just have to settle for factory loads.

If you forced me out of .375H&H, it would have to be .458 Win Mag in a Model 70 Safari Express for me, though I would really have to work up to the recoil.

I'd run loads from 250 to 500 grains depending on what was needed. I think it would be a blast to use with Trail Boss and light bullets. I also bet a 350-400 grain TSX would do amazing things without rattling my eye sockets.

And I'll help....or not.

The 22Lr is known to be successful on deer with proper shot placement and at relatively close ranges. But why? When one can use a 22 mag with better velocity using the same weight or a heavier bullet at a longer range.:A Stirring::A Outta::D Pop Popcorn::E Rofl:

And back to the Original Post. Please.
22 Hornet is even better for deer, yokes and turkeys.

Hello,

I saw your post selling left hand rifles. Do you have any additional pics of the .416 Rem mag?

Thank you.
