Favorite .308 caliber

My favorite is the .358 Winchester. What an overlooked gem! I've heard it described as the .35 Whelen Short, b/c its a .308 necked-up to .358 (whereas the Whelen is a necked-up '06). I can't wait to use it in Africa. Its a perfect deer- to- elk- to- hogs- to- moose caliber with solid stopping energy out past 250 yards. I also like the good old .308, in which I have three lever guns: BLR, Savage 99 & Win. 88.

But its not a .30 cal....:D

well, since we're talking 35's,,,, Nope I'll leave it alone, thread is 30's. LOL

.300 H&H in a Ruger #1 = Awesome!

I love my Ruger Model 1 in 300 Win Mag

...with a lengthened throat to keep the base of the bullets out of the boiler room!

This rifle is going to make Loodt Buchner famous next year! :)

The Super 30 seems to be very well represented here!

My Favorite 30,,A 1942 Austrian Mauser converted to a 30-06 Sporter many years ago by an Unknown Smith still shows some Waffen Marks ,sports a Leupold 4x12 nowdays

I guess mine would have to be my 300 Win Mag for the simple fact it is my only 30 caliber rifle outside of my old 30-30.

Favorite .30 in general is not an easy question for me, because there are at least three that I like very much (.30-30, .30-06 and .300 H&H, not necessarily in that order on any given day).

However, since this is primarily an Africa subject forum, please count me in for one more vote to the .300 H&H.

The best rifle for it in my estimation would be the 98 Mauser / 24 or 25" barrel and 4 shot magazine.

(Although a Brno 602 Magnum in .300 H&H would do nicely as well).

Overall my favorite so far is the venerable 30-06. Hard to find any .308 cartridge available more readily in as many configurations around the Worlds favorite hunting destinations. And though not normally considered a magnum, it certainly comes close.

Mine is in a beautiful M70 Winchester Featherweight Custom High Grade... almost too pretty to take into the thorn bushes.

For pure fun at home, I do like my DPMS lite hunter AR10 in 308. But so far it has not gotten past the range.

I like the military cals. 308 win is my favorite. You can get thousands of rounds without shooting out the barrel, it is inherently accurate, uses very little powder and almost as versatile as the 3006.

I envy you. Our AR's are only allowed on an "approved range". Welcome to Commie Kanuckistan.

Picture was taken shortly after I found a nearly mint Remington 7600 in .30-06 a Pawn Shop near my home. Serial number is from the early 80s and I topped it with a moderately priced BSA deerhunter in 3x9x50. It shoots better than I can shoot it and the rapid follow up shots are excellent on feral hogs. It also has some sentimental value - I learned to shoot centerfire rifles on my father's Remington 760 (also a .30-06) when I was a kid.

Winchester Model 88 Carbine n.308. Wears a Nikon 4x. I once put 3 shots off the bench into 7/8". It was the first large caliber rifle I owned, given to me by my Parents as an Xmas gift at age 16. I still own it.

Second wuld be a pre-64 Model 70 in 30-06 with a Leupold 2.5-8x. Accurate, interesting and can always find ammo, if needed. It was my PG rifle on my 1st African safari.

Cut my teeth on a Remington 1903A3 in .30-06, military surplus all original with stock number still on the butt. It was given to me by my grandfather for my 16th birthday, still have it and will not trade. Purchased a Sako AIII in .30-06 with a 3-12 x 56 mm Karls- Kahles u. Wein, Helia S model scope in 1991 prior to moving to Colorado. Never drew an elk tag, but did drop a few mulies and some antelope with it. Sold that about 5 years ago and purchased a Ruger #1 in 405 Winchester for a buffalo hunt sometime in the future. Back about 2008, traded a Springfield XD, 5" Tactical in .45 ACP for a Tikka T3 SS Lite in .30-06, which I mounted a Zeiss 3-9 x 40 mm Rapid Z600 on. It hasn't had the opportunity to kill anything yet because it's sister in 6.5 x 55 SE is doing excellent work so far. However, the .30-06 would et my nod for favourite .30 cal and may also get the nod as a PG rifle when I do make my safari.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
