CZ550 416 Rigby Laminated Stock

Hello all, I came across a CZ550 in a laminate stock at a local gun shop. He said it was offered a few years back. My question is should I buy it? He has it listed for $895. It looks clean and I am in the market for one. I don’t know much about the 550s so your help would be appreciated.

I know there are no enablers on the site.

CZ 550 in the $900 range are not all that uncommon (e.g. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/805958905 ). Make sure it is the caliber you want. For $895 there is no need to compromise, you can get pretty much any common dangerous caliber caliber you want at more or less that price: .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .458 Win, .458 Lott.

As to whether you want a laminate stock or not, it is your call. Many like the synthetic Bell & Carlson with full length aluminum bedding block and pillars for $270 (https://www.bellandcarlson.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=1099 ).

There are many thread about the CZ 550 here. Suffice it to say that during the looong period when Mauser did not offer full length double square bridge actions, the famed London maker Rigby used Brno 602/CZ 550 actions for their $xx,000 custom guns. 'nough said?

From the factory you will find that they are a little rough (nothing that a few hours of TLC cannot fix - plenty of advice on africahunting.com). The one thing they truly need to become really worthy is a true bolt mounted firing pin-blocking safety (a.k.a Winchester 3 position safety). These are available as aftermarket upgrades for about $300.

$895!?!?!??!?! Jealous here! I had to pay $850 shipped for a used one and then another $180 for a decent stock!!! Don't wait, GO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The factory laminated stock was discontinued a few years ago but the laminated stocks for the 550 magnum caliber rifles was available from the CZ webstore until the supply was exhausted. Photo is from a 2005 CZ catalog.

Check out Great Northern Guns in Anchorage some time, some interesting stuff comes and goes through there. And pawn shops can have surprises. I once saw a left-handed 416 Remington in a local pawn shop. Not exactly a hot selle, so had I wanted it (I am a lefty) I could have made a nice deal.

If I find a lefty I’d snatch it up. I would love to get a hold of a good lefty big bore. I go to great northern every now and then. No doubt you can find interesting things in there.

If its Mag Na ported isnt that a thing of days gone by? I read about it when i was a kid. I would have thought brakes replace magna porting.?
I know Remington VTR ate ported but its not so common in factory rifles is it?
My CZ550 is walnut but you can smooth the actions easily.

Went and looked at the gun again. I forgot to mention it’s been mag-na-ported.

This just makes shortening the barrel an easier decision.
Send it to Wayne at AHR and have it slicked up with a #2 and you will be all set.

I bought the rifle. I’ve liked the 550s and the Rigby. Kind of a nostalgia thing maybe. But I was already looking at cutting the barrel down. I prefer shorter barrels for the brush hunting.

Blazer barrels can be bought Magna ported. I’ve not bought one but looks like a good option for less recoil without all the muzzle blast of a brake.

Sadly, Magna porting has ruined the resale value of many a rifle.
Happily, the excellent CZ 550 magnum is made with an inch or two more barrel than needed.
If you don’t have a gunsmith in mind, contact Andy Hawk here in Anchorage at “Hawks Gunsmithing” (907-562-0881).
I have a CZ 550 in .416 Rigby that Andy pimped up for me (Model 70 type safety, 23.something inch barrel, machined front sight, with flip up large white bead for my geezer eyes, etc., etc.)

If you live in or you get down to Anchorage some day and have a little time to kill, I’d be happy to show my .416.
I live way down the south end of town (5 or 6 miles past Cabela’s) but you’d be welcome here.
If you want to avoid the extra drive, I’d be happy to meet you at G. N. Guns with it, whatever.

Magna porting tends to help more with muzzle rise than recoil in my opinion. We all know the increase in noise when a brake is installed. I can not tell a difference in the level of sound between a Magna-Ported barrel and non ported. BUT! Never forget there is hot gas moving out of those ports and they are dangerous if someone gets to close.

So i own a CZ550 in 458wm. What i really wanted was a .375 H&H but i bought new .458 on clearance.
But if i buu a .375H&H then i can have the .458 cut down for brush country just to see the diffence. That works
