Title pretty much sums it up. I have a a plane ride next week and need something to do to kill the time.

Roots of a Game Ranger, Graham Root "Mkhonto" is a good read. Probably hard to come by, an indy print.

Just about anything from Peter Capstick. Death In the Long Grass is a great read.

go on safaripress.com , you will find a very large selection of african hunting books from older times to modern. there are so many good books , fred everetts 2 books are very good, same for william yorks 2 books, geoff wainwrights book on zambia is good, and if you want a bit of humour then hannes wessels strange tales from the african bush has some very amusing stories, also has some of the bigger than life characters from zim that are no longer with us in it, like dave masson and rufus snyman. hannes chapter on them is worth buying the book for alone.. as i said lots of choice.

+1
Also, you could check out Amazon.com, type in Horn of the Hunter "Ruark" then scroll down and there will be a lot of related books. Another (more modern book) I have recently read was, 21 Days in Africa, by Dan Donarski.

Also some of the mall bookstores have books on hunting Africa.

The Boone and Crockett Club have published reissues of many older titles...just finished "Wandering s in Africa" by F.C.Sealous, and also TR's "African Game Trails".....Gary

Look in Amazon under the author's name "Stigand". I can't remember the title but it's something like "Elephant Hunter in Africa." It is simply one of the best non-fiction books on African life and hunting I've ever read. Stigand was also clearly a brilliant man with hundreds of speculations. Amazingly, he also predicts that almost precise nature of his own death in his book."

Another book I can remember is "Hunter" by the remarkable John Hunter. He was one of the old Kenya hunters who operated as a government animal control officer and as a PH. He also did some work for Hollywood, the film I remember is "Mogambo" [I think]. Hunter did the shooting and developed a personal relationship with the directors and the stars. He loved Clark Gable and Grace Kelly. He despised Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. Now Sinatra wasn't actually in the film but flew over to have a big party.

The other books I can recommend are by Jim Corbett. They are non-fiction hunting stories and based in India rather than Africa. In each chapter, he hunts a maneating tiger or leopard to death. Fascinating. His are simply the best hunting stories ever.

+1 on Safaripress, I am addicted !

+1. Capstick is my all time hero

Currently reading the book; "Eland" from the excellent series of books; "Hunting The Spiral Horned Antelopes".
It is an excellent compilation of stories, written by various authors on this subject, from the old time Adventurers like Selous, Roosevelt and others, through today's PHs and clients alike.
This outstanding book covers the various sub-species of this animal, best ways to hunt each in their own habitat and my favorite chapter - Rifles, Cartridges and Bullets For Eland (or some combination of words like that).
Last but not least, since I am quite childish, this book's numerous photos are a definite a huge plus in my opinion.
I suppose at this point it might be needless to say that I definitely recommend this book.

If it hasn't sold by next week I might be interested. Stock would have to be changed along with some other items. I'm already having a 416 Rigby built so money is a tad bit tight.
