What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

I always carry my granddads buck knife that was handed down to me while hunting. Usually, it's only used to whittle or open a snack. A nice fixed blade on your side might bring some comfort while in a foreign land. It's always a welcomed gift in addition to a tip. Besides, it just looks cool.

I am in Africa as I respond and am totally miserable as I didn’t pack my LB-7 which always comes with me along with a sheath knife of some sort. The folder comes in handy for removing small thorns from various body parts and on this trip would have been useful to cut a piece of moleskin for a blister.

@chris275 nice you are able to carry a family heirloom - my Father and Grandfather ALWAYS had a pocket knife on them wherever they were…they are handy and once you get use to carrying one you can NOT live without it. I use mine multiple times a day, a useful tool

What is the purpose or rather why carry a knife on safari
The only real true answer is……
Because you can!!!!

Just finished my latest two week safari. I just loved wearing my new Von Gruff knife even though it was not needed
I have one that I will wear on my next safari.

If you want to look like a douchebag, carry a big, expensive belt knife. You don't need one. That's what the skinners are for. Carry a small folder for utility. And yes, you could even cut off an elephant tail with it.

Whether you have skimmers or not carrying a knife with a blade over about 4" in length marks you as someone that really doesn't know what he's doing. In NA you can skin an elk, a moose or a bear with a blade that long. Whenever I run into a deer hunter with a 6" buck knife, I've noticed that he usually won't have a buck. One time I did see a buck that a guy with a big knife had actually killed. It was a small, barely legal 3x2. In his pride he told me that the buck was really old. He knew this because the buck didn't have any teeth on top in the front.

I just congratulated him on his buck.

I have responded to this before but it just doesn’t seem to want to go away. If you don’t know whether or not to carry a knife on safari (?) You most likely shouldn’t have one. For me it’s like asking should I have ammo for my rifle. The uses for a knife are many!! I have had an occasion where the PH didn’t have one until after we had left for home. It doesn’t have to be a big Bowie. For some a Leatherman will do just fine. Knives tend to say something about the man that carries it and it’s all the better if he knows how to use it. Hope this puts the subject to rest—

I doubt it will put anything to rest, but I agree with your thinking.

@Cajun Hunter —- Now, do you “really” think your post will Put-this-to-rest???
More likely you just inspired another 100+ responses to it !!

Nobody has mentioned this after 19 pages?

That hunter should hang up his gear and never hunt again. As a bow hunter, I don't carry a gun. A knife will have to do. I hope to God that I never need it, but I won't ever regret carrying it. My only regret was taking a nice knife with me on a hunt where I had a trip to China prior and they confiscated it from me at the airport on the way OUT of their country when they scanned my luggage, telling me it was illegal for me to have it there.

@mrpoindexter — interesting video and some questions:
1). Why wasn’t the .375 used again to finish off the buff? Even if Son/PH had to grab the rifle out of the Clients hands to go save his Dad. Or some other rifle, was there only “One rifle” in the entire group??
2). Who was standing there “still filming” while someone is getting mauled by a Buff?
3). What Buff can be killed with only “3 stabs to the lungs” with a 7” knife? I don’t think a deer would die that fast.
Even Tarzan took more time to kill dangerous game with his knife !!

I thought the same thing. My guess is that the buff was already dying and would have tipped over without the the knife wounds. Even so, I will still carry a knife when I hunt anywhere.

DAMN, GUESS I MADE A FAUX PAS WHEN I CUT OFF MY ELEPHANT TAIL WITH A 5" CUSTOM BUCK PATHFINDER.

@SETH RINGER : if you are hunting without carrying a Knife - then you better be carrying a “Douche Bag”.

Is this rifle sold? If not what is the weight of it and do you know if there is enough difference in diameter between the 35W and the 9.3 to allow for a rebore to a 9.3x62 which is what I am after?
Thanks,
Gary (Just down the road in Springfield)

Forgive me if this is the incorrect area, I signed up to this forum just now because I wanted to be on the list to purchase a copy of your autobiography. Please feel free to pass my information along to whomever is selling. Thank you so much. I look forward to it!
I like the Tillie in my picture. They are supposed to fit loose (2 fingers inside hat band), have mesh for cooling, and hold their shape after washing.
