Judging Kudu - Conservation Not Inches

With the cropped pics I did not to bad, but with the full pics I think I am not bad at judging mature or not when it comes to Kudu.

One of the things I learned when I hunted last year, is that I need binos with higher power to be able to judge animals better.
The 7x42 Zeiss Victory was great to find animals, but far from good enough to judge animals well.

Brickburn the second last bull has some of the hair I suggest IMO also the oldest bull in the bunch

1,2,3 were still growing horn, evident in the bases and the lack of the compressed ridges.(smoother horned).

The little Scruggs are only present in bulls of reasonable old age... :)

I see the ruff you are talking about. You need to be pretty darn close to be using that.

I think the drought had 6 looking a little thinner than he might be with some decent food.
Those hips starting to stick out and that shoulder hair are sure telling he is not a young guy.

I have more I'll send to you and we can post, an age thread, maybe in all species?
....

Great idea. Send me the Kudu pictures and we can work on the other threads. More education the merrier.

Shuffled a bit.

I'm pretty sure that if I had better binos to look at the pictures with I would have gotten it right!!!

Great thread and very informing. I would love more with other animals also. I find it difficult to judge the animals. Even thoughI just listen to the PH it`s always good to know as much as possible for yourself :)

Just had to take a look back in preparation for the season.

A pic of this East Cape bull was e-mailed to me last year. I hope to see him in less than 40 days.
What are your thoughts?

He has only been seen a few times since the pic was taken. Thanks to Warren Rudman for sending the pic.

Hope you get him! You’ll have a great hunt with Warren. Went there last May and it was an awesome trip.

Don't even hesitate. That is one hell of an EC Bull.
Wish I could see him form the front to really see those curls and his width.

His face, neck and chest are well developed and he was very healthy in that picture.
In his prime then for sure. Maybe after last breeding season he has developed some character from all the fights he got into.

I'd be willing to check him out on the ground after and see if I made a mistake.

I just hope he has made it through the drought so that I get the chance to share his photo again. I have about 7 days reserved, mostly with the intention of looking for this guy.

Nothing like a specific animal to increase your focus

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
