Hello All. I'm Kay from South Africa. Originally from Johannesburg, now retired in Durban and doing a lot of shooting, a fair amount of hunting and a bit of fishing. I find it interesting to see what overseas hunters think of our hunting industry.

Welcome to AH Kay.

What are you noticing?

The current rate of exchange is attracting many overseas hunters, a fair number who see that as an opportunity to fulfill their dreams of a once in a lifetime African safari, so much so, that especially with a first time visitor, it's like letting a kid loose in a candy store!

hi kay welcome. what do you hunt mostly and with what?
Hi, I'm a meat hunter, not a trophy hunter. I "hunt" several times a year in different parts of the country, mainly enjoying the outdoors, camping under the stars, and if a buck or two comes along that I fancy, then it's one for the pot. If not, then I enjoy the trip. I generally use my 308 for most of my hunting, but if there's a chance of a Gemsbok or Wildebeest, then the 338 gets an outing as well. For bushpigs, warthogs and the like, I use a scoped Remington 870 with a rifled choke and slugs.

Welcome to AH, Kay!

Thank you all for the warm welcome

Thanks. If these last 2 years are anything to go by, next year should be a cracker in KZN.

Welcome @kayc good to have you joining AH. We have a farm in the EC but know KZN well, a beautiful place. Im interested to hear more about your bushpig hunt, the finer details? Feel free to post a story or photo even.

Hello Kay, I truly enjoyed being a guest in your country and hope to return soon. I have only had the opportunity to hunt there once, near Mkuze, but my wife really wishes she had gotten to go with me on that trip and since I'm such a good husband I figure I have to go back. Of course, I'm only thinking of her and not planning on going back for my own selfish reasons.

My last bushpig hunt was on a macedamian nut farm near Harding on the Kokstad road. The pigs were wreaking havoc in the plantation. Went out at about 10pm and walked into the plantation in the dark to a vantage point and glassed around with night sight bino's. After a few hours, we spotted a pig coming our way. When he was about 20 metres from us, my buddy turned on his flashlight, lighting up the pig which started to turn away. I had about 2 seconds to pick him up in my sights and turned him into cabanossi! Used my Remington 870 with a rifled choke and slugs, scoped with a 2.5x Simmons.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
