I am going on a safari with my dad in June. This will be my first and his second trip. We are going to the Sapi hunting concession in North Zimbabwe.
I have been involved in shooting and hunting since I was young and I'm a pro handgun advocate.
This trip will be a big thing for me not only because it will be my first safari, but I am also a Type 1 diabetic, so that brings it's own challenges. I'm trying to read all I can on TSA regulations, supplies I will need, tips to transition easily, etc. If there is anyone else, especially a female, who is a diabetic and has been on safari, I would appreciate any advice you can give. Having been a diabetic for 19 years I am very familiar with all its challenges and inhibitions, so I'm going to be doing trial runs in the form of long hikes on our property to get in shape and keep my blood glucose at good levels.

From what I've already read on this forum, I know I will gain a lot of knowledge and I'm looking forward to talking to some of you.

    Sincerely,
    Rebel Diana

Diana- WELCOME! You are a real trooper! I'm sure everyone here will be pulling for you to get this trip completed and then we will be waiting to see your write up here on the forum. Hopefully we will have someone online here that can help you.

    Welcome to AH.

You have been handling it yourself for a long time. (Several friends and family with the same issues. Although none have made the big trip yet)

As long as the PH/Outfitter knows that you will need some smaller meals to drag along into the bush you should be set.

I would also suggest the airlines know of your medical status to make sure the staff make meals available to you.

My bet is the "time change" will be the biggest challenge to your blood sugar maint.

Looking forward to your pictures and stories from your hunt.

Welcome to AH Rebel Diana! You'll be fine you've been dealing with it for 19 yrs you've probably got a pretty good handle on it. As BRICKBURN stated let your PH know of your condition and any special requirements you may have you may want to pack a few fast melting candy bars in your daypack along with your sugar tester just in case your sugar gets to low with all the hiking. We'll be looking forward to your report and your pics upon your return good luck on on your first of many Safaris.

Thank you for everyone's encouragement! I really appreciate it.
I live in Southwest Missouri, not too far south of Springfield. My dad said North Zimbabwe is a lot like the Ozarks, so I should be familiar with the terrain. :)
The main aggravation will be packing all my supplies in. I'll probably have to have double of everything in case of an emergency and then I have to make sure that it's split up between my dad's bag and mine in the event that only one bag shows up. Aaagggh! ;) And I thought camping trips were a bother!
I'm also researching a cooler for my insulin for the long flight and then the drive to the concession.

Anyway, slowly, but surely I am gathering info and I thank everyone for their advice.

Welcome, Rebel Diana. Another Missourian here, from Springfield. I joined the forum last fall after my son and I booked a trip to RSA, our first safari. The forum has been a wealth of information for us as we have planned our trip. Now, most everything is planned and we leave in May. Good luck to you and your father on your safari!

    Welcome to the forum :)
I don't know if you have done long flights before, but my advice is that you prepare well for the flight.
Inform your airline about your condition and bring some candy/chocolate bars on the plane just to ensure you have them if needed.
Drink plenty on the plane and check your blood more often during your flight than you normally do.

I am sure you will have a great time and I feel that I need to warn you, that there will be a great risk that you will be infected by the African hunting fever;) :)

Thanks for the advice Norwegianwoods! Actually, I've never been on an airplane before so there will be many "firsts" for me on this trip. ;)
I'm not too worried about the flight, but I will be contacting the airline ahead of time to warn them that I am bringing medical supplies.

I hope you will take lots of pictures during your hunt and write a report about it in the forum.

I'll warn you that it'll probably turn into a book length report! I will post pics though and probably write an article about my experience.
