Today our house of representatives passed a motion to delist rabbit and hare as an huntable game species. This comes after they were added to the ' red list' of endangered species in the Netherlands. Total BS and the numbers they used were faulty. They fabricated their own numbers.

The real problem is no sensible policy regarding predator control. Two viruses that decimated the population. Unprecedented number of feral cats. But the main point with all that their is still an healty enough population.

Without hunters in the Netherlands the wildlife would be practically gone. Buy the left ( including the socialist Geert Wilders) hate hunting so lets blame the hunters because they are easy targets.

On the bright side, the minister of agriculture and the government our unwiling to act on the motion. Time tells but the signs are not good.

Hope they don’t get too many ideas in Belgium...

Well maybe Brabant and Limburg in the Netherlands could join with Flanders. Have our own country of like minded sensible people ;) . What are the species in Belgium you hunt the most?

Can you shoot the bloody cats?....or is that serious shit if you do...

@spike.t You will never hunt again in your life if you do...

IDK about hares, but in areas which don't get and stay particularly hot in the summer, rabbits will breed 6X per year. The does only ovulate *after* they copulate, thus, they get pregnant every time they copulate.

In the hot places, like where I live in Texas, they'll only breed 4 or 5X a year.

Problem now is mixomatose and Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) . Hares are doing fine. Add the feral cat problem to it, explosive growth of predatory birds, larg quantity of foxes, poaching. I could go on and on but in no scenario are hunters the problem. Hunters are legally binded to keep the population up of the species of game. Number of shot hare and rabbit is very low. No hunter kills their population off.

Jeez that's unbelievable....what a joke...feral cats are one of the most destructive animals out there.... bloody domestic ones aren't much better
It even gets better with all that they even allowed the wolf back in the Netherlands. Like we have enough forest area :X3:. They think they will hunt wildlife instead of all the cattle around it.

Seems like quite an overreacting act, I am glad the the agriculture minister has stepped in.

We used to be allowed, but the law was changed in 2010 or so. Now it is catch (and release). Bye bye partridges, pheasants...

In Flanders mostly rabbit, hares, pheasants, pigeons and partridge. Some duck and geese. Any fox we see.

In Wallonia wild boar, roe deer.

Might make a lot of sense getting Flanders and the Netherlands (back) together :D

What about you, what do you hunt?

Btw, anything still living in the Oostvaardersplassen?

To be honest mostly pest control, crows, jackdaws (kauwen) wood pidgeons. And Roe deer if we talking larger game. Then there is the occasional rabbit)hare/duck in the hunting season. Some occasional fox and Geese.

I was thinking buying a hunting share ( jachtaandeel) in the Ardennes but do not know how it actually works.

Do not start about the Oostvaardersplassen. If we talk about animal cruelty in the dictionairy you will find a picture of the Oostvaardersplassen. Wildy mismanaged "deer Parc" if you ask me.

Sorry for bringing the Oostvaardersplassen up, it is a shame, what is happening there.

The Ardennes... I started off my hunting career there, buying a share in a big game hunt for two years in a row. Hated almost every second of it. As those ‘freely available’ slots are only on domains with battues (driven hunt). Driven hunts are not hunting imo, driven hunts are population control, pest control. And especially when you are the tourist, paying 2keur for a season which consists of six Saturdays sitting in wind and rain hunting the same three plots of land... just a big commercial business and I’d rather stay far from it and the people that frequent them.

There are other hunts in the Ardennes as well, with stalking or from a pirsh or kansel . But the well managed and ethical ones are close to impossible to find and truly impossible to get in. That being said, we are together with some very close friends in the last negotiations to get our own terrain on which we will be able to manage in our own view. No invitees, no commercialisation, no butcheries (=battues).

Fingers crossed :)

No problem it is not nearby but still a shame. Best luck in getting your own hunting grounds.
