Let´s hope they really enforce it !

Agreed... At least the pressure has created a "start:...!

I sense the price of Ivory just went up.

Prices will go down. No demand. Economics 101.

I'll bet the chinese buy it gradualy when the price falls and stockpile it elsewhere till the 'official' ban is over.

Hows the Rhino horn supply for traditional dagger handles to Yemen going ? has that changed ?

banning trade doesn't necessarily eliminate demand. Prohibition didn't stop alcohol demand, nor has making many drugs illegal stopped demand. If people want it they will still buy it.

I'm with Brickburn, the price just went up in the short term. And smugglers just got another product to add to the list.

that exactly the way l see it ,too fellas
banning anything ,never lessens demand ........
which when adding the risk factor , not only rises prices ,but makes it more appealing to some .......

Hey guys, not sure if you agree but this article is just fantastic... Best news since sliced bread!!!

One step close on stopping poaching - http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-31648475

Yeah I'd like to think this is good news. And if perhaps the Chinese are serious about enforcement of the ban it will be. But my initial thoughts are in agreement with @BRICKBURN too.

Time will tell, and I'll hope for the best.

China is just joining the political correctness group. Trying to improve their image. Yep prices just went through the roof and there will be more poaching's than before.

I agree that the price will go through the roof.

Banning it will only make it more sought after in China.

Case in point, prohibition in the US. People want booze, they get booze.

I believe it is illegal to import Cocaine into the US. Did demand decrease?

Demand, Ivory has been part of this culture for how long?

Reading the Zambezi Society article has me thinking that the ban might just create a large pain for importers into China. They won't be able to hide the illegal Ivory in the legal imports for a year.
It will be tougher that's all.

If China et al starts summary executions of illegal importers it might slow down the import.

Kenya also has a flourishing wildlife population that only dies of old age and natural predation how because killing game is illegal, right??? I mean, how can there be any demand with a law like that???

Yeah. Banning and demand have little correlation.
If you want to effect the demand side they had best change some peoples minds about the desire to acquire it in the first place. Loooooong term proposition.

It will take a lot of convincing to have me stop chasing the elusive 60 inch Kudu!;)

Exactly Wayne!!! :)

I'm trying not to be cynical here, but activity and results are often confused....

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.
