Perhaps my own shortcoming, but I'm always wanting to get out of a cartridge exactly what it was built for. The idea of loading down for lower pressure to match the ballistics of a "lesser" cartridge I guess has it's merits. But I know I just won't do it. It would be something akin to putting a bunch of work upgrading the power/performance of one of my Harley's in an effort to save gas mileage, are you kidding me? I'm going to rip that baby open and get out of it all I can. Some may have the discipline to do otherwise, but I don't.
According to my Swift manual, a 460 Wby will launch a 400gr bullet at 2800fps or more. The .416 Rigby I had, should have done the same at about 2600fps. The Rigby for me was like getting kicked in the head by a mule, no thanks.
So yeah I'll say it without hesitation, I don't want that recoil and I bet most hunters don't either. And I sure as hell don't want the muzzle blast from a brake on my ears. I was at a safari shoot some years ago where this big gent was talking up his 460 before the shoot got underway. And then he pulled the thing out and it of course had that muzzle brake on it. Sitting back 20 yards from him with ear muffs on during his time on the line was still freaking annoying.
The ultimate stopper when loaded to it's potential it may very well be, but no thank you.
